On December 8 and 9, 1975 a survey was made at Circle p=rs Buick, New York City, to determine the nature and extent of Lr! exposures to asbestos, solvent vapor, and carbon moncscid !-- Pertinent matters were diseussed with Messrs, w. McCrocklin, f; S. T. Kirchoff, w. Rsinmann, S. Scarborough, S. Reese, and L- u * McRorie. The survey wee conducted by the writer. Results of air tests were reported by telephone on February 4, 1976. sbestos \ i* i i in response to an alert issued on August 8, 1975 by the u National institute for Occupational safety and Health indi cating a potential health hazard for persons exposed to asbestos during the servicing of motor vehicle brake and clutch asseoblie air tests were made to evaluate the extent of employe exposure during the following various brake operationss (1) State of New York annual motor vehicle inspections; and (2) routine brake servicing. At this location after wheels were removed, residual dust was disped out and, where needed, brake components removed and replaced. At no time was dust removed by blowing with compress air. Brainard v. Borg-Wamer etal. 00000345 Mr, w. McCrocklin -2' September 28, 1976 The OSHA Asbestos Standard stipulates that employe expo sures to asbestos shall aot exceed the eight-hour, time- weighted average of 2 fibers greater than S micrometers in length per cubic centimeter of air sampled (fibers/ce). At no time can employe exposures exceed the ceiling limit of 10 fibere/ce. !!J In order to relate asbeetoa exposure during various phases of brake service operation to the ceiling exposure limit, b several air samples the operation) were of abort duration (the actual length of collected. Past experience has shown that test results from these kinds of air samples tend to be higher 0 time-weighted averages. ':\ !i vers The results of air teats indicated bslow the prescribed OSSA limits. that most axposurss Although Tests 1 and V j 14 approach and Teat 2 exceeds the current accepted permis sible exposure level, these exposures pessistad for only * short period. Khan extrapolated over an eight-hour workday, the time-weighted averages are considerably lower. Thus, it O appears reasonable that all time-weighted asbestos axposurss r were within accepted limits. Ho changes are required. Recently, the Occupational Safety and Health Review _ cccniBsicn clarified the question of which employes should \\ /' receive OSHA-requlred medical examinations. The cooaission \v/ ruled that examinations mast be administered to employes who ( have any exposure to asbestos. Dr. R. G. wiancek, GM Medical j Director, has requested that Dr. H. A. Pace, GM Building, U Hew York City, be contacted to make whatever additional arrange ment, may be necessary. Brainard v. Borg-Wamer etal. 00000346 Kr. W.
