The majority of samples collected this month continue to border on the limit reliable detection, (<0.01 ppmv). We continue to detect trace quantities of VCM In the community, however, and the analyses are suspect f r the following reasons: (1) The gas chromatographic analytical method is not truly specific for vinyl chloride and Is subject due to potential interference from unknown compounds. (2) We occasionally note detection of VCM/positive response by th flame ionization detector in samples collected "up-wind" from plant operations. (3) We have observed consistant detection/response among samples . collected near auto traffic, e.g., the Red Head Service Station south of the plant, on McCorkle Avenue. We plan to verify suspected analytical interferences of either gasoline/auto emissions by collecting samples at greater distances from Plant 514 operations at a busy service station. /nb Attachment ucc 034094
