Monitoring results indicated four employees with exposure levels equal to or greater than the current permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.5 fibers/cc. It is recommended that employees performing these jobs be required to wear respiratory protection (NPSP220E). In addition, the plant should evaluate the exhaust ventilation on #3 Bipel weigh-up table and mixing platform (50 fpm) and investigate a vacuum system or a blow-off enclosure with exhaust ventilation for the OEM grinder and saw operation. Discussion An Industrial Hygiene survey of the Trenton Chemical Friction Products Building for asbestos dust was completed December 3, 1983. Results from the survey indicated that the #1 OEM saw operator, south OEM grinder, #3 Bipel operator and the quality control inspector all had exposure levels greater than or equal to the 0.5 fibers/cc permissible exposure limit. As is required under the asbestos emergency temporary standard (ETS), employees who are assigned to work those job stations where exposure to asbestos dust greater than or equal to 0.5 fibers must wear a respirator. NPSP-220E is recommended* In addition, the plant should evaluate the exhaust ventilaTOil^ controls and employee work practices to see if changesJSttt/or improvements can be facilitated in order to meet thmjpO.S fibers/cc standard. All other sample results indicated employee exposure levels to be below the 0.5 fibers/cc permissible exposure limit. As is required tor in the asbestos standard employees exposed to concentrations in excess of 0.1 fibers/cc are required to have an annual medical exam mat ion which is to include a chest x-ray and a pulmonary function test. Furthermore, those employees sampled shall be notified of their sample results in writing S. C. Enders, Jr January 6, 1984 Page 2 Subject: PERIODIC ASBESTOS SURVEY within 5 days of receipt of this report. Finally, as required under the asbestos ETS all employees who are exposed to asbestos concentrations in excess of 0.5 fibers/cc are re quired to be trained in regards to health effects relating to asbestos exposure, proper use of respiratory protections and a review of the federal OSHA Asbestos Standard 1910.1001. If you have questions regarding this report, contact the writer. hm Attachments cc: F. A. Burnett D. 8. Buz a D. R. Dolenga R. Gryniewicz R. J. Horoky J. L. Mathis N. McCallum J. D. McCarthy R. D. Jefferson Ave. Detroit, Michigan 48214 Dear Mr. Heidmous: Enclosed is the report of findings of the Industrial Hygiene study conducted at the Trenton Chemical Plant on November 4, 16 and December 1, 1983 by A. C. Barbaglia. Mr. G. Pickrell, the Union Member of the Local Joint Committee on Health & Safety, was informed of this study. Respiratory protection was recommended for employees exposed above 0.5 fibers cc. In addition, it was recommended that the plant evaluate (the exhaust ventilation on #3 Bipel weigh-up table and mixing platform (50 fpm) and investigate a vacuum system or a blow-off enclosure with exhaust ventilation for the OEM grinder and saw operation).
