BOX 8361, SOUTH CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA 25303 Diilp C.-iyr.fi Sobjc:* August 25, 1977 IH/EP Asbestos Monitoring at the South Charleston Plant Gentlemen: On August 8, 1977, air samples were taken during the removal of insulation (possibly containing asbestos) on top of a furnace at the mainland powerhouse. The insulation was wet, which should signi ficantly reduce emission of airborne dust. During the operation, Mr. C. C. Bragg and Mr. C. N. Cunningham wore personal sampling pumps and an area sample was also taken. All the men on the job wore respiratory protective equipment. The sample results, attached, show that the concentration of asbestos fibers complies with the current OSHA eight-hour, timeweighted average of two fibers, longer than five micrometers, per cubic centimeter of air and also complies with the ceiling concentra tion of ten fibers per cubic centimeter of air. The above air samples were sampled and analyzed by phasecontrast microscopy using Union Carbide Corporation, Chemicals and Plastics Industrial Hygiene Handbook Method Number 38C-29X4-Rla. This method is identical to the procedures used by NIOSII, the organ ization responsible for developing methods specified by OSHA. If we can provide additional assistance, please contact us.
