Dear Dr. Keboe: Referring further to your letter of October 50th regarding our maintaining control of the method of transporting ETHYL and "Q" fluid, I had quite a discussion with John Schaefer on this subject at the Plant last Thursday. I can well appreciate your concern but you may rest assured that we have never permitted a shipment to be trans ported by other than approved methods. It is true from time to time our customers take up with us various plans for using their own boats or their pet trucking concerns, and we feel that we should not take an arbitrary stand but be willing to investigate the facilities that these offer and determine whether or not they come within the standards that we have laid down for use in transporting our product. We of course have no particular favorites in the way of railroads, steamship com panies or trucking concerns, except to require the equipment,-personnel and the method of control and handling to conform to what we know your ideas are on the subject. However, we have never given in to our customers* wishes unless we are conclusively convinced that they constitute a proper method of shipment. I do not think that it is necessary to put any stipulation in the contract because under the broad terms of our present clause that the material be handled at all times in accord with your rules and regulations we certainly have a right to completely control shipping methods and whenever it becomes necessary we will exercise any degree of taking an arbitrary stand that might be required. co oa m 'o o <3> O U You may rest assured on this point and the only thing that might affect it is the possibility of neglect on the part of the human element, which we also guard against as much as possible but which cannot be made completely foolproof. If you have any further Instructions or suggestions we will certainly carry them out and I will also be glad to discuss this subject further with you when you are next in New York. .
