The findings from the study describe a distinct form of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), not previously recognized, associated with high levels of benzene exposure. MDS is associated with a tendency to evolve into acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Following a review of the draft manuscript, the Hazard Evaluation Group (HEG) has determined that the information is new and that the Administrator of the EPA is not fully aware of it. Pursuant to the requirements of Section 8(e), Notice of Substantial Risk, of the Toxic Substances Control Act, the HEG recommends that the Agency be notified of the information. The text if the letter that will be submitted is attached.
