Teague M.D. State Commissioner of Health Frankfort Kentucky Dear Doctor Teague: FIease accept my thanks for your telephone call of a few days ago, and for the Information about the meeting of the State and Territorial Health Officers at the Jack Tar Hotel in -- San Francisco on October 26th. Unfortunately it will be utterly impossible for me to be present at your meeting since 1 shall be out of the country on that date. However, I have arranged for one of my associates, Alvin Davis, M.D. to meet with you and to present the facts concerning the use of tetramethyl lead, In part or In whole, as a substitute for tetra ethyl lead in motor gasoline. Dr. Davis will have with him a few copies of a report of a field investigation which we carried out in this relationship, and copies of this report can be made available later (by mall) to the responsible officials (and their technical associates) in all of the States and Territories in so far as these officials may choose. 1 shall not anticipate what Dr. Davis will present, but I should like to make it clear that we shall follow this development with considerable care so as to establish the facts for our own satis faction, for the guidance of the industries concerned, and for the record. I have no anxiety about the hazard that might conceivably be attached to the use of this material, but there is no completely satisfactory test except that of experience and time, and, therefore, this type of evidence must be obtained and communicated to the industry and to the health authorities. If questions arising out of your meeting with Dr. Davis should remain unanswered at the time, I shall be glad to have them referred to me for future consideration, or if required, for future investigation.
