Dear Mr. Noerr:
I enclose the report of the analytical results on the fourth (and, I believe, the final) pair of samples of milk.
I don't know whether the cow's appetite failed and she diminished her intake of forage, or whether some other factor entered into the picture, but as you can see, the concentration of lead in the milk decreased instead of increasing, during the Interval between the last two series of samples. In any case, the sequence of events has turned out much as I expected, in that the concentration of lead in the milk has remained comparatively low. It is reasonably certain, therefore, that none of the members of your family suffered any ill effects as the result of drinking milk. (Moreover, the milk which you sold, could hardly have been measurably abnormal in its con tent of lead.)
Let me remind you that this has nothing to do with the validity of your claim that your cattle suffered ill effects from their high intake of lead in their feed. It was my belief, based on somewhat indirect evidence, that the milk would not have reached an unduly high concentration of lead, on account of their high rate of intake.
We have certain other analyses to carry out, and I have held up the
sending of a bill to you until these had been completed, so as to provide
you with one full account.
