If there i any at all, and should not be cause for concern if the current lov level* of exposure continue. La*t year* scientist* from the Interactional Agency for Besearch on cancer, known as lABC, evaluated data from a substantial number of human scientific studies sad concluded that evidence was inadequate to link fiber glass with cancer in man. Data from more than 400 scientific reports amd studies produced over the past SO years supports the fiber glass industry's position that fiber glass is safe to manufacture and use. The Thermal Insulation Manufacturer# Association, commonly known as TIMA, has taken a proactive approach to ensuring chat fiber glass is safe by sponsoring health studies, which ate conducted by leading scientists at independent U,S. national laboratories and universities. Frankly, i don't know of any other industry that has studied Its products as extensively as the fiber glase industry. The fiber glass industry's commitment to health research is demonstrated by the fact that TIMA has an active Health Safety Group, which is responsible for initiating, evaluating, directing and administering all TIMA research activities relating to health, safety and work environment. a- 02 400 1319 Motion* v* mwxrt. to...Prwiftlon for VCW-w Int.rvlta t. fire hnmis vtcft ftfrtr Hast AnsuUHc?,. tita? Fiber glass and asbestos can be compared to sugar and cocaine. They look similar, but they heve radically different effects on the body. (Xdd. if time allcwa) The materials are different in tens of chemical exposition, physical structure and. most importantly, In the way they react in the body, animal studies show that glass fibers, unlike asbestos, tend to dissolve in bodily fluids end can be naturally cleared from the body. vhae does,the4ndustor who i_aUedlnd....ht.al.t& prgblta*.. say.-^OMJL the.fpmr .3*erm^rnlnq,^Piaf* l4m not familiar with the case, but it*s very possible that that particular worker say have been exposed to materials in other environments that could have caused health problems. Public information Committee SUBd: OSHA RULEMAKING HEARING AND NIOSH TESTIKONY In updating its proposed rule on air contaminants, coverlog Bora than 400 substances, the 0. 8. Occupational safety and Health Administration <OSHA) is conducting bearings la Washington. DC. OSHA proposes a standard of 5mg/3 tor fibrous glass dust and 10 mg/*3 for mineral wool fiber (gravimetric method). On August 1, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NI08B), research arm of the tf. 8. Department of Health and Human Services, commented os CSKA's proposed rule. Richard A. Leman, Director of the Division of Standards Development and Technology Transfer, presented NIOSH* a testimony. NIOSH*a current Recommended Exposure Level (SSL) for fibrous glass is 3f/cc (fiber count method). NIOSH does not bon have a RRL for mineral wool. TIMA supports the efforts of OSHA and NIOSH aimed at protecting worker health as evidenced by ire long-standing and extensive research program and by its continuation of that research. Further. TIMA believes all tuiemahing should be based on sound scientific research sad the association will continue to fully cooperate with governmental agencies to assist in the collection of all current medical-scientific information. Attached is a copy of NIOSH*s written testimony and a transcript of TIKA's cross examination on August 1. * 02 400 1323
