Uniroya! To Discontinue
The use of asbestos fiber will be discontinued at Uniroyal Hogansville Plants prior to July 1 it was an nounced today by David Crawford, plant manager.
Federal regulations require that manufacturing operations be conducted to minimize the amounts of asbestos particles that disperse into the air. The plant has been operating to meet these requirements, but more stringent
requirements are scheduled to become effective July 1.
Crawford stated that asbestos fiber has been combined with synthetics and cotton fibers and used in high temperatures-resistant fabric and yarns for the past 30 years at the Hogansville Plants.
Substitutes for the asbestos fiber have been undergoing development and this work will continue.
Use Of Asbestos Fiber
He stated the substitute high temperature fibers include Nomex, glass and also steel
cord. The Hogansville Plants
employ approximately 500 persons and approximately 110 a r e e n g a g e d in manufacture of products
which use asbestos.
