Minutes -- Plant Manager's Safety Board January 17, 1975 To: Members of the Plant Manager's Safety Board Those Present: G. A. Danner, G. W. Daues, W. C. Fuller, C. L. Gilmore, E. H. Jones, W. H. Lane, N. L. Marsh, G. T. Ryan, J. G. Trafton, J. B. Cook (for C. M. McCullough) Item 1. Item 2. Fire training for operators was approved to train one-third of the operators in 1975 using regular chemical powder. The materials cost of the training will amount to approxi mately $50/trainee and will be bourne by the trainee's department. The addition of LN and ACY, ex-battery piping to the superhazardous color coding classification was approved. The question was raised as to whether Phenol should be added to this list. Mr. Danner will study. Item 3. The Safety Advisory Committee a) has made an award choice for the 3 million man-hours and Purchasing is procuring the items. When they arrive Board members will give the awards to the employees. b) recommended a dinner meeting between the 1974B Hourly Safety Committee and the Board. Tentatively scheduled for February 6, 1975. c) approved the addition of wording to provide follow-up to Board items for inclusion in P-0100. Item 4. Hourly Safety Committee items from meeting of January 7, 1975. 1. The handling of drums by the boilermakers in Depart ment 48 is hazardous because the drums are lifted to the second floor and placed on the walkway. A platform is suggested. The committeeman claimed that this had been suggested to supervision 18 months ago and was agreed that it should be done. 2. New slings being ordered do not exceed the 10 ft. size and longer slings are needed. 3. It was suggested that a safety suggestion system might help to get things done. The committeeman mentioned a system used in a steel company where the supervisor had to sign the suggestion form indicating that he had SC 002504 STG 2401825 LAM003711 seen the suggestion and was committed to do something about it. He recounted that after the supervisor was fired for ignoring a suggestion, things got done. 4. It was suggested that the proper method for closing a steam valve should be the subject of operator safetymeetings throughout the plant. Dne committeeman stated that such training was given in his unit but valves were still improperly closed. t. Miscellaneous. Since no comments were received on the proposed Guide Lines for Ball Valve installation and use, the content of the letter of December 19, 1974, from Mr. Trafton to the Board will be made a P-Bulletin. Mr. Danner is studying the need for additional lighting on forklift trucks and will report at the next meeting. It was announced Messrs. Brubaker and Trafton plan to visit other Company locations to discuss safety programming. The Cancer program for the women employees was held on January 9, 1975, with 65 percent of the women attending. It was very well received. Meeting adjourned at 11:50 AM. CLG:wy C. L.
