Ky. 40292 STATEMENT OF BACKGROUND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND SUMMARY: Carlo H. Tanburro, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Conmunity Health; Director, Liver Research Center, Division of Digestive Diseases, Department of Medicine; Chief, Division of Occupational Health, Department of Conmunity Health; School of Medicine, University of Louisvill , Louisville, Kentucky, 40292. Dr. Carlo H. Tanburro, born in Caserta, Italy, January 20, 1936 (age 46), naturalized American citizen, is a medical doctor whose specialty involves hepatic diseases (hepatology) especially as related to toxicological injury. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. in 1958; a Doctorate of Medicin from Seton Hall College of Medicine & Dentistry, New Jersey (presently*the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School) 1962. His postgraduate training included an internship and medical residency training in internal medicine at the Jersey City Medical Center, Jersey City, New Jersey from 1962-1964 and a senior medical residency training in internal medicine at the New England Center Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, 1964-1965. After com pletion of his residency training in internal medicine Dr. Tanburro was awarded a postdoctoral research fellowship by the National Institute of Health in hepatic metabolism and nutrition at the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry from 1965-1968. Dr. Tanburro has held the following academic positions of Assistant in Medicin 1964-1965, Tufts Medical School; Assistant in Medicine, Instructor, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Professor of Medicine at the College of Medicine & Dentistry, New Jersey (presently the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey) 1967-1974. HO has held the position of Associate & Full Professor c Medicine, at the University of Louisville School of Medicine since 1974. At present he is, in addition. Professor of Conmunity Health as well as an Associate in Oncology at the University's Cancer Center and also holds an appointment as Associate in Pediatrics. Adninistratively Dr. Tanburro has held the adninistrative roles of Coordinator of Hepatitis Programs In the Division of Hepatic Disease and Metabolism at the UCC 098013 STATEMENT OF BACKGROUND PAGE 2 New Jersey Medical School from 1969-1974, was Chief of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at the University of Louisville from 1974-1980, and has directed the Occupational Medical Surveillance Team for the Vinyl Chloride and other occupational health projects at the University of Louisville since 1974. Administratively, at present he is Director of the Liver Research Center and the Liver Reference Laboratory in the Department of Medicine and is Chief of the Division of Occupational Health in the Department of Community Health at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Tanburro is a menber of both national and international societies in the fieldsof internal medicine, hepatology and toxicology, which include the American Federation for Clinical Research, American Association for the Study . of Liver Disease, the International Association for the Study of The Liver, American Society of Hunan Genetics, is a fellow of the American College of Nutrition, a merrber of the New York Acadory of Sciences, the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, American Pdblic Health Association and a merrber of the American College of Toxicology. He has been the reoepient of a nunber of honors and awards regarding his Distinguished Service to the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Society of the college for his contributions to medical education. Among Dr. Tanburro's professional activities are included attending physician to the University Hospital and a consultant to the Veterans Administration Hospital as well as to many hospitals in the greater Louisville area. Among his other professional activities are included Scientific Reviewer for national and international journals, being a merrber of the Environmental Health Corrmittee of the Jefferson County Medical Society; Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Greater Louisville Region of the AIL-CIO Occupational Alcoholism Program; a menber of the National Conmission on Digestive Diseases Workshop on Environmental Factors; Chairman of the Siboannlttee on the Detection and Prevention of Chemical Hepatotoxicity at the Jbgarty Intematiosl Center, National Institute of Health, Washington, D.C., and a menber of the Board of Governors on the Jefferson Alcohol & Drug Abuse Center. Dr. Tanburxo is listed in the directories of Who's Who in Health Care, Legal Medicine, . American Men and Women of Science, and Forensic Services Directory. His research training and background includes work at the Merck & Co., Institute for Therapeutic Research in Rahway, New Jersey; the Thorndike Memorial LaboratoryHarvard Medical Unit, Boston City Hospital, Boston, Mass., and the New Jersey College of Medicine & Dentistry as a National Institute of Health Research Fellow in Hepatology & Nutrition. For the past seven years Dr. Tanburro's major area of medical care and research has involved weak in industrial health sur veillance in the detection and identification of chemical liver injury, especially as related to environmental and industrial toxins; the development of clinical and laboratory methodologies for the detection of chonical inj\iry and carcinogenesis in men and animals and the relationship of alcohol and viral injury to the liver in the development of liver cancer. The results of Dr. Tanburro's scientific investigation and research work have been both invited and selected to be presented at national and international meetings in North America, Europe, and Asia. At present, Dr. Tanburro's professional activities are directed toward the development of a regional-medical-surveillance system for the identification and assessment of occupational and environmental agents which carry risks of human disease and injury. /vs UCC 098015
