The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced the award of $3 million to
assist 174 community-based organizations, tribal governments and academic institutions to
address environmental justice issues and concerns in their communities.
Administrator Carol M. Browner created the Environmental Justice Small Grants Program in June 1993 to provide assistance to community-based organizations that are working ' on local solutions to local environmental problems. The Agency awarded $500,000 to 61 recipients in 1994.

In 1995, EPA received 716 applications from parties interested in obtaining a portion of the S3 million available in this program. The grant recipients were awarded up to $20,000.
EPA'slO regional offices created review panels to evaluate and select grant recipients.
Grant determinations were made based on the projects' ability to:
.
* Facilitate communications, information exchange, and partnerships among affected stakeholders to address environmental concerns;
* Educate the general public to be more conscious of their local environmental and public health issues and encourage community involvement;
* Teach about risk reduction and pollution prevention and seek technical experts to demonstrate how to access, analyze, and interpret public environmental and health data.
The projects this year touch on a number of environmental and human health concerns including: childhood lead poisoning, fish contamination standards, water quality and pesticide issues. Many of the projects include extensive education and outreach activities that will help ensure that communities become more informed about local environmental issues.
