EPA ED_001523B_00003862-00002 The Leadership Dialogue is a private diplomatic initiative, which brings together Australian and American leaders from government, enterprise, media, education and the community to help review and refine the parameters of the bilateral relationship. The mission is to broaden and deepen mutual understanding between our nations and to enhance the framework for regional security in a manner that underwrites economic and cultural prosperity for our citizens. The Leadership Dialogue came out of initial discussions during the January 1992 official visit to Australia by President George HW Bush, and subsequently carried the imprimatur of President Clinton following his election in December 1992. The Forum on the Gold Coast will begin on Thursday, August 3, with an evening Welcome Reception, followed by a number of "nightcaps" on key topical issues. The main program will continue on Friday, August 4, and Saturday, August 5, and will consist of Leadership Dialogue sessions (completely off the record), Australian and American political briefing lunches and a formal dinner on the Saturday evening. Key themes will include: national security; geo economics and trade; cyber security; innovation and entrepreneurship; energy; and the environment. EPA ED_001523B_00003862-00003 o +1 202 559 8544 www.aald.org Some further background to the Australian American Leadership Dialogue The Leadership Dialogue has been publicly described as "the most significant exercise in private diplomacy ever undertaken in Australian history" The bipartisan Leadership Dialogue is the only non-USA initiated NGO to have ever been invited into the White House for private briefings--three times under President George W Bush, and twice under President Obama--2012 and 2014. Australian participants at the annual Leadership Dialogue have included Prime Ministers Paul Keating, John Howard, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull plus successive Leaders of the Opposition from 1993 through to Bill Shorten today. Inter alia the Leadership Dialogue has been a facilitator of the successful FTA negotiations culminating in the FTA effective January 1, 2005. Our board includes former US Ambassador to Australia Hon Jeffrey Bleich Our board co-chairmen are former Australian Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile (who successfully negotiated the FTA with the USA) and most recent Australian Ambassador to the United States, Hon Kim Beazley--another former Deputy Prime Minister as well as Minister for Defence. Vice President Joe Biden has twice hosted a bipartisan group of Leadership Dialogue delegates at his residence. The 2012 photo at the residence of US Vice President Joe Biden (attached) depicts the bipartisan nature of the Leadership Dialogue: Ambassador Bleich, Vice President Biden, Ambassador Beazley (hidden), Bruce Reed (a founding member of the Leadership Dialogue since 1993), Phil Scanlan, former PM Kevin Rudd, current Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, former PM Tony Abbott and former Trade Minister Craig Emerson. A moderator leads the discussion but it is very much designed as a free flowing discussion with participants contributing from the floor.
