The allegations in this and other news reports that PVC is a major fire hazard are not true. PVC is difficult to ignite, and when the source of ignition is removed, will not support further combustion. Any fire is dangerous whether it involves natural or synthetic materials. Studies have shown that most deaths in fires are due to exposure to carbon monoxide, which is released when wood, fibers or other materials burn. BFGoodrich is concerned about this adverse publicity, which is largely being generated by competitive material manufacturers. BFGoodrich is working with other members of the PVC industry to present the facts to appropriate governmental and regulatory agencies, as well as the public.
