This report has presented the loag-ceru esusc-spselfle noteAlley patterns for employee* and e-eaplay**s of a large chealeal producing pione owned tad operated by tho Monsanto Company. A cohere was devalopod .froa eoepany rteord* consisting of 2490 aalo wage-earners who were taployod a nlnloua of ea year botvmoa January 1, 1949 eo December 31, 1964* The cohort uu varlflad to b eooplotc via a nttbod which Is independent of eoapeay-held records. Vital status of tho cohost was deearnlaad as of Dmeeaber 31, 1974 for all but 7 persons (99.71 follow up). A total of 403 study members vers found to have died. Death cer tificates were located for 591 or 94.0 perecae. The observed aortallty asong chealcel-produetioa workers was coupared to the aortallty experi ence of white aales la the general populations of the Ohited States, Massachusetts, and the county from which the work force was largely drawn (Hampden County). Tladlngs of cost interact ore:
(1) The overall aortallty of ehealeal production workers, as re flected by e Standardized Mortality Satie of 93.S (U.S. control), was favorabln, as would be expected in an esployed population. Slightly lewor SMS's for all causes of death ware observed based on the state and county controls.
(2) Tor most malignant neoplasas studied, the V.S fenced SMS's were larger then those derived froa the Massachusetts and Manpden County aortallty experiences. However, SMS's for nalignanc neo plasms based on the two regional control populations vers, gener ally, very slallar*

(county control). Positive (radiant* in SXl's warn observed ral> atlva to calendar time, age, and the interval from onset of em ployment, suggesting the influence of occupational faecors on the overall canear mortality experience. (4) Baaed on Kampden County eoaparisons, elevated SHR's vara observed for the overall category of digestive aystea cancer (SMR101.8) and the Individual site* of stosaeh (SMR-130.3), rectum (SHR* 134.1) and biliary passages and liver (SMX?130.4). SMR's for ' esophageal cancer (134.3) and pancreatic eancar (114.3) were elevated only following 20 years from onset of employment.
**
Koae of the digestive canear excesses were statistically sig nificance however, the rectal, liver, and pancraaele cancers
e showed'evidence of a relationship with both the duraelon and the lapsed, period from onset of employment. The possible re lationship between occupational factors and digestive system caneer mortality was confounded by ocher factors, such as birth place, whleh appeared to partly account for some of the exeasses observed. (3) k statistically significant (!<.03) excess in deaths from genlt urinary tract cancers was observed based on the U.S., state, and local comparison populations. (SSft'i - 149.4, 142.2, and 133.4, respectively)* Elevated SMR's were also observed for all indi vidual sites, although, none were statistically significant. The genlto-urlnary cancer excesses did not appear to be related to calendar time, duration of employment, or to the Interval from

(6) Tha only elevated SHS for cancers of the 1/nphatle aad haenacopoleelc tissues vat observed for the residual category MA11 Other

Although the snail nuabers Involved prohibited detailed analysis, the presence of three multiple ayeloea deaths within this category nay be laportant and should be exsoined with respect to work histories la future studies, (7) lastd on tf.S. eoaperlsoes, deficits In deaths wars obsarved for "All leart Diseases" (Sift-98.2), rheuaatle heart dlsaasa (Sift44*1), aad hypertensive haert dlseese (SME-90.7). An eleveted SMB ef 108.8 wee found for coronary heart diseasa. Comparisons with the state end county heart diseasa nortalley experience during 1980-1978 generally produced lover Sift's. (8) Sated on eeoparlsona with O.S. white sales, mortality froa in fluent* sad pnotnoonls ves greater than expected (SMX-130.2) end was found to lacrosse with calendar tine, age, and the lapsed period froa onset of eaployaeot. CooperIsons with the state and county control* slininatsd or reduced the axeess, however, the gradient with tine free Initial enployoeat was nalaealntd. It is unclear whether occupational or nonoccupatioaal factors art

tha categories "All Zxtarnal Cauaaa of Death", "All Accidents", and "Motor Vehicle Accident*" (U.3. control). Mortality waa greater than expected for aotor vehicle aeeldeuts, aulcldea, and hoalcldes `when conparlaon* were baaed on the state and

county control population*. Tha resole* of this study underscore the importance and necessity of additional seudles designed to further evaluate the nortality patterns of the Indian Orchard plant workers la `relation to work history and occupatlonal exposure*.
