INTRODUCTION
HLR 276-85
The purpose of thisstudy was to determine a 4-hour approximate lethal
concentralon (ALC) fotfffl^n rats. The ALC Is defined as the lowest
atmospheric concentratTon tested that caused the death of one or more rats either on the day of exposure or within 14 days post exposure. Except as
documented In the study records, this study was conducted according to the applicable Good Laboratory Practice Regulations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A. Animals Young adult male Cri:CD(SD)BR rats were obtained from Charles River
Breeding Laboratories, Kingston, New York. Each rat was assigned a unique 6-digit Identification number which corresponded to h numbered card affixed to the cage. Rats were quarantined for one wee< prior to testing, and were weighed and observed twice during the quarantine period. During the test, rats were housed in pairs in 8" x 14" x 8" suspended, stainless steel, wire-mesh cages. The rat assigned the lower number in each cage was identified by a slash in the right ear. Rats'
tails and cage cards were color-coded with water-insoluble markers so that individual rats could be identified after exposure. Except during exposure, Purina Certified Rodent Chow* *b002 and water were available ad

Exposure Protocol
Groups of 6 rats, 8-9 weeks old and weighing between 231-322 grams wereexposed -hole-body for a single 4-hour period to a vapor atmosphere ofwIHnin air. Rats were weighed prior to exposure and were observed
for^nnical signs of toxicity during exposure. Surviving rats were weighed and observed daily for 14 days post exposure, weekends excluded,
except when deemed necessary by the rats' condition.

The test material was assumed to be stable throughout
the exposure phase of the study.
0. Atmosphere Generation
Vapor atmospheres o^HlB<ere generated by pumping the liquid into a
round bottom flask. The flaslTwas at ambient temperature for the first
ALC exposure. In the remaining four exposures, the round bottom flask was heated to approximately 62-121C to attain higher concentrations.
The resulting vapors were carried by houseline air to the 17 liter glass
exposure chamber.
The atmospheric concentration otj----^as determined at approximately
30-minute intervals by drawing sampresof the test atmosphere from the exposure chamber with a glass syringe. Samples were analyzed isothermally at 90C with a Hewlett-Packard 5790A gas chromatograph e*. .ipped with a
flame ionization detector and a 6" X 1/4" 0.0. glass column packed with
10 % SE 30 on Supelcoport 80/100 mesh. Concentrations were determined
by comparison with standard curves, which were.prepared daily. Gas
standards were prepared by evaporating liquidflH^n calibrated glass
bottles.

Chamber temperature was measured .."'th a mercury thermometer, and chamber oxygen ^as measured with a B-ioMarine Model 225 Oxygen Analyzer.
F. Records Retention
All raw data and the final report will be stored in the archives of
Haskell Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine, Newark,
Delaware, or in the DuPont Hall of Records, Co., Wilniington, Delaware.

A. Exposure Conditions and Associated Mortality
Chamber temperatures ranged between 26-30C and chamber oxygen
content was 211; Atmospheric concentration and mortality data are
presented below.

B. Clinical Observations
During exposure, no clinical signs of toxicity were observed in rats exposed to 4.9, 20, or 61 mg/L. Rats exposed to 160 mg/L exhibited labored breathing and salivation. Rats exposed to 290 mg/L exhibited pale ears, labored breathing, staggering and sporadic movement.
All deaths occurred during exposure. The sole survivng rat exposed to 160 mg/L exhibited slight weight loss (3,01) on the day after exposure, foil-owed by a normal weight gain throughout the recovery period.
During the 14 day recovery period, some surviving rats exhibited Slight weight loss at 24 hours post exposure. No other abnormalities were observed.
CONCLUSIONS
Under the conditions of this test, the inhalation ALC ofUH^pn rats was
160 mg/L. This material is considered to have very low toxicity5y inhalation.
