GAS TURBINES
Plant features
Main use is peaking service although com cycle plants gain for base load operation^
Gas turbine installations are making a major contribution electrical generation costs in central stations. The higher operating'< older steam plants accounts for many such turbines in peakingfs' Base load gas turbine generation, on the other hand, will not be as ecti ally attractive until fuel costs are cut. A step in this direction hash* development of coal-firing techniques--although technology is stiff? experimental, one such lignite-fired gas turbine is in the tabulation!
Emergency standby gas turbine sets are finding an important apgl in large.computer-controlled central stations, where a continuous^ liable source of power is essential to automatic operation. Since^jfe these stations are oil-fired, a gas turbine standby set is a logical am

industrial plant. It is generally believed that the toward self-generation will continue in paper
s, petroleum and chemical plants and, to a lesser Sent, in food processing. There is also a trend to
;er turbines to cut initial investment per kw and rove operating efficiency. The 1965 survey belists 25 industrial turbines installed or under
construction in the U.S. and Canada. Chart above shows how these divide by type. Note that 53% are condensing with automatic steam extraction for pro cess, space heating and hot water. A small sample of 8 overseas installations is also included. While the turbine business is cyclic, orders last year were good and the outlook for 1965-66 looks promising. This is in sharp contrast with conditions just a few years ago when ten turbines a year was a good average.

Boilers are now equipped

The 1965 survey of new industrial and sp steam boilers consists of 168 installations* and Canada, covering a total of 226 units over 10,000 lb of steam per hr each. Total erating capacity of these boilers is closed lion lb per hr. We estimate that this sa ' sents about one-third of the total numbed of this size installed during the past tw As was the case last year, preferred pr for large industrial boilers is between psi at 700 to 799 F (tabulation, below)...

Principal use
Almost twice as many engines ;
Of special interest here is that of the 712 units surveyed throu;
the world, only 48% are full diesel. This is mainly due to tht
nomics and availability of natural gas. Generating electricity i
the main use, by over 70%. The fact that the total energy co
accounts for 7% of the various uses is worth keeping an eye on.
it comes to engine capacity, size range up to 500 hp contains 28 the units surveyed. Interestingly enough, 46% of the total are
in-line type, with V-block cylinders accounting for over 28%.
Unquestionably oil and gas engines are going through a dyi
era of research and development. This year Power readers reqi us to survey more units, which are tabulated on the following

IN-LINE AND V-TYPE cylinder block are most popular of the fi types surveyed, although over 23% did not indicate type o
OVERSEAS UNITS are used mainly for power generation. U.S.-Canada lead in number of engines for total energy systems, mechanical drives

FULL DIESELS overseas are more than double the total in U.S.-Canada, no doubt because natural gas is not available in most other countries
WORK HORSE range for larger engines is 2500-2999 the U.S. and Canada. More of the smaller engines are used
