N. Y. Kerch 1, 1933. TO Members of the Lead Industries Association: CAIXIKO LEAD srecincATiog One of our members hae suggested the advisa bility of the Lead Industrie* Association preparing specifications for the use of ester departments end vatsr companies In the purchase of pig lead for calking pur poses. Troffl tlae to tine s Levs also teen requested hr veter companies and their cast-iron pipe supplier* to furnieh recommendation* for a calking lead specifi cation, all of vhlch vould Indicate that a need for such a specification exists. 0 A surrey of the procedure of io m of the larger cities In purchasing calking lead reveals tbs fact that the requirements in various cities differ greatly and In vary eassa call for lead unsatisfactory for calking purposes. For instance, the Jtdcral Govern ment Specification for Grads B lead, vhlch la used for calking, requires only 93 per eent pure lead, and Chicago requlrea 99 per cent lead, obviously either 6 per cent or 1 per cent of Impurities such as antimony, vould sake tbs lead unsuitable for calking. Gome cities Include chemical Itad In their specifications and others do not. In other words. there la no uniformity in the specific ations of the larger cities some of the ep-elficatton* being entirely too rigid and other* too lax. V1th tbs requirements of a good calking lead In mind, ve have prepared the enclosed t*o suggested specifications vhlch might be used alternatively by vater departments and vater companies, but vhlch require virtu ally the same lead regardless or vhlch of the tvo speci fications la selected. Ye are submitting tvo suggested specifications to permit those water companies familiar with them to use A^.T.U. specifications vhereas other* may prefer * briefer recommendation. It 1* felt that either of these specifications, if adopted, will protect 4^ tbs interests of lead generally by eliminating unsatls- Uim w i. - V: -* i'iw.m 11 u, l I SSJWMJJ. It would alao protect our seaber* fro* the competition of poor lead sold at low prices. Ve would like to hare your opinion as to (1) whether you think the Association should adopt s o bs sort of a specification for calking lead and (2) your erltlclss of the enclosed suggested specifications. If standard specifications are adopted by the Association we will atteapt to hawethea accepted by the Aaerlcaa Pater Torts Acsoclatlon, but whether adopted by that Association or not, wo will see that water departments and other users of calking lead throughout the country are thoroughly Informed about our recosvendatlons.
