FILE NAME: Asten Hill (AH) DATE: 0000 DOC#: AH004 DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: Product Info VENTMESH 975-R Combination synthetic, asbestos open-mesh fabric. Machine direction yarns are a combination of poly ester and acrylic multifilament. Three plies of wirereinforced asbestos yarn are used in the cross machine direction to provide resistance to wrinkling and narrowing. Fabric is resin treated after weaving to lower absorbency and increase stiffness. Synthetic blend of polyester/acrylic in the machine direction provides excellent dimensional stability in hot/moist conditions. - r . - *5- r . - l v ri* . if 71W A r ' ' V - * >-% "j ; v v i ' - ' * 7~ .T S i f * FT, * '#f f - -f - J.:-* , A 'Y- YYAY':Y:-T--A A / v < X A A -/>A'::/YvV:.;:''v-i~^.Y Y rv ~ . Combination polyester/ acrylic warp provides good hydrolysis resistance in most positions. Ventmesh has a wide permeability range making it compatible with all pocket ventilation systems. Rugged 3 ply construction permits the fabric to withstand adverse machine conditions, such as dryer wraps and minor misalignment. Fabric has excellent machine direction dimensional stability and is recommended for wet end positions. Severe hydrolysis positions should be avoided. CONFIDENTIAL- In Re: Bickham. et al. v. Met Life, et al. * AC/LA 033041 RAW ASBESTOS to FINISHED FELT Asian falls m ade anfiraly in our M odem Planrs Long fibre asbestos rock mined in Canada is shipped to us in bulk, in a raw, fibrous condition. Here it is carded and spun into a specially designed asbestos yam . Our looms weave the asbestos and cotton yarns into the unique Asten Felt as described on page 24. After the felts are woven to the correct width and length, they are pre-shrunk and stretched on giant machines. All our machinery for the manufacture of yarn, looms for weaving the fabric, and the pre-shrinking and stretching machines were specially designed to accomplish the desired result. CONFIDENTIAL- In Re: Bickham. et al. v. Met Life, et al AC/LA 029638 , FACTS The Aston Dryer Felt is the original patented asbestos dryer felt. It is used in a majority of the paper mills in Canada and the United States. This acceptance of Asten Dryer Felts, our only product, has made us the "World's Largest Producer of Dryer Felts." FEATURES The Asten Dryer Felt provides full protection from the heat of the dryers by means of a complete asbestos surface on the sheet side of the felt. This is illustrated by the photograph on the cover of this folder, which was made from a piece of Asten Felt with the two layers specially separated on the loom, since the felt actually is a complete, integral fabric and the layers cannot be separated by hand or come apart in service. . . Note that every thread in both directions (warp and weft) in the top layer is made of asbestos which, of course, cannot burn. CHARACTERISTICS Reports from users of Asten Dryer Felt3, together with independent labora tory tests, assure us that Asten's are more porous than any other dryer felt on the market. Asbestos i3 more absorbent than cotton, therefore, since absorbency picks up the moisture from the sheet and porosity lets the moisture escape through the felt, the unique construction of the Asten Dryer Felt provides efficient drying as well as long life. Various weaves and weights of Asian Dryer Falts assure these characteristics under different operating conditions. . . Asten Dryer Felts are pre-shrunk and stretched, thus they will not narrow or lengthen on the machine. Ample elasticity is retained to provide sufficient "give" and "take" in the felt, so that it will run snugly over the dryer face. CONFIDENTIAL- in Eg; gickjiam, SULJ L . Met U f c - g J L ADVANTAGES The advantages of Asten Dryer Felts naturally vary, depending on mill conditions, therefore, the following is a summary of results obtained by various mills: (1) Low cost per ton of paper dried; (2) Long life; (3) Fewer felt changes; (4) Run better with less attention; (S) Better finish; (6) Im proved cockle conditions; (7) More even drying; (8) Increased production; (9) Steam saving. APPLICATIONS Asten Dryer Felts are being used in all positions on machines of all widths and speeds and in mills making practically every grade of paper, including fine photographic paper, rag book, bond, ledger, tissue, glassine, kraft, wrapping, board and news. From this it is apparent that the economies and benefits from Asten Dryer Felts are not confined to any specific class of paper or machine. INSTALLATION Asten Dryer Felts cun oe joined with any type of seam that you are accus tomed to using, i. ?., sewing rivaling, gluing, or any combination of these methods. In addition, since Asten Dryer Felts will not lengthen on the machine, they can be joined by moans of the Hill Patented Clipper Seam or they can be supplied woven Endless. CLIPPER SEAM--Separate pieces of fabric containing clipper hooks are attached across the ends of ifce inside of the fell, away from the sheet. The seam is made by meshing the two ends and inserting a wire through these intermeshing clipper hooks. Thi3 makes a secure and even seam which is quickly and easily installed. The top or sheer srl.: of the felt, next to the dryers, becomoa practically an endless aUrid/e. ENDLESS FELT--Threads are sc carefully woven together that it is practically impossible ro detect the splice, thus all .-nance of even the slightest seam mark is eliminated. The methods used in weaving the ends together make the splice as strong as any other part of the felt, thus there is no danger of the splice coming apart on the machine. AC/LA 0296^0
