In the original CMA vinyl chloride study, the keys were kept by the participating plants/companies and were not given to the original contractor (Tabershaw/Cooper Associates). In our September 23, 1983, summary of Phase I of the Study Updated, we pointed out that for Plant 23, the key to the identity of the cohort could not be located (at PPG), nor could the identity of these individuals be determined by any other means. Therefore, update was not feasible at Plant 23. I believe these are valid reasons for PPG to withdraw Plant 23 from the study. Sincerely yours. While this report is very informative, I do take exception with the paragraph (on page 3) that references our Lake Charles, Louisiana, plant. During Phase I of the update, our Lake Charles plant determined that we could not participate in the study. PPG was apparently never provided with a key to the identity of the original cohort. After alternate methods to identify the cohort were unsuccessful, PPG had no alternative but to withdraw. This was a disappointment to us, as we were looking forward to participation in this study. PPG would appreciate your reflecting the conditions that surrounded our withdrawal from this study in your reports.
