Welch, Vice President J Internal Correspondence DATE SUBJECT AWWA Ad Hoc Committee on Asbestos in Drinking Water REF: JFW correspondence, same title, July 22, 1981 ACTION REQUIRED: Review for information Attached is the proposed AWWA Policy Statement on Asbestos in Drinking Water and a tally of the ballots on the final draft. The Association opposed Recommendation #5 (minimize asbestos in drinking water by meeting AWWA water quality goals for non corrosivity). Indeed, the close vote reflects the contentious nature of this recommendation. With the exception of Recommendation #5, the proposed statement parallels language advanced by AACPP. AWWA Staff advises that the statement will be reviewed and letter balloted (3045 days) by Water Quality Division (WQD) which met on December 7,1981. If the proposal passes the WQD, it will be forwarded to the Technical and Profession (T&P) Council for similar action (30-45 days). From there, it goes to the General Policy Council, and concurrently, for publication in Mainstream magazine. This permits public/member comment on the proposal. After it clears the Policy Council (projected time: 60-90 days) it is sent to the Board of Directors. AWWA Staff doubts that the review processes will be completed in sufficient time for the Board to act on it at its May, 1982 meeting. That means Board approval is not likely until January, 1983 assuming no major impediments at any other review/approval stage. AACPP plans to correspond with AWWA Executive Director, Dave Preston, to urge expediting the proposed policy statement. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. JFW/ajb cc: A.
