GANDOLFO, MANAGER, CENTRAL MAINTENANCE, DEER PARK MANUFACTURING COMPLEX SUBJECT: DUST AND NOISE EXPOSURE MONITORING On June 27 and 28, 1991, industrial hygiene monitoring was done during abrasive blasting activities at the Sand Yard. The monitoring was done to provide an initial assessment of < new abrasive blasting helmet (Northstar), as compared to the performance of the helmet currently in use at the yard. Samples for dust, including certain metals, and noise were taken. The results of monitoring are included on the attached Industrial Hygiene Exposure Monitoring Form. The exposure cuidelines for total dust and the metals are as follows: Total Dust Copper Lead Nickel 10 mg/m~ 1 mg/mJ 0.05 mg/m1 mg/m3 These guidelines are as 8-hour time weighted averages. For noise exposure, hearing protection is required at or above 85 dBA. During the sampling, Kiefer wore the Northstar helmet. The results of the dust and metals samples are all well below their respective exposure guideline. Although no result was obtained for the one noise sample, the sample taken in the Northstar helmet is consistent with noise levels -typically measured inside blasting hoods, approximately 100 dBA (refer to Health & Safety Order S-124). This limited sampling data suggests that there is no significant difference between the two helmets, relative to potential exposures to noise and dust. All affected employees must be informed of these sampling results. This may be done individually, or by posting of the attached forms in a place accessible by the employees.
