Guirtond Special Speculations Branch Office of Pesticides and Toxic Substances i^viromental Protection Agency iiasfalngccm, DC 20460 Subject: Ouestiennalre on non-asbestos drum brake 1Inters (Informational needs for friction products con taining asbestos) Dear Hr. Cuimond: On July 22, 1981 Hr. Bob ?igg of the Asbestos Information Association forwarded to our attention a series of eleven questions prepared by your office concerning nan-asbestos drum brake linings. This was done as tbe Trieticm K&terl&ls Standards Institute is in a better nosition to respond to your request for information. You may recall chat the Friction Ha cartels Standards Institute participated in an earlier request from your office in regards to disc brake Usings. Thar request was sene to our full sesbershlp of 21 companies. Our response to your office was based upon replies from only three cotroenies as several of the others felt you were requesting sensitive informatIon. The questions now being prepared on nan-asbestos drum brake linings are even more sensitive to our Membership. Developscat work on ashestoe-free dna brakes is several years behind the work on disc brake linings. As a result, ouch *of the currently available information is proprietary. Be cause of the confidentiality of the information your office is seeking, the 'Institute oust respectfully decline the offer to participate. V* would suggest that you solicit replies iron the friction materials manufacturers directly. Attached is a list of what vs believe to be all the friction materials manufacturers in the United States. Sincerely, PRICTIOtf MATERIALS STANDARDS INSTITUTE EWD/erc 2, V.
