Subject:
An Industrial Hygiene Study of Asbestos Exposure, Department 7^ Kentucky Truck Plant
As requested by Mr. P. Reach, Safety Engineer for Kentucky Truck Plant, an asbestos study was made to determine employe exposure at the clutch assembly area.
Employes remove clutch assemblies from boxes and assembly them to the engines. Employe exposures to asbestos dust primarily occurs when the discs are actually handled. Breathing zone samples were taken from the two employes actually involved in clutch assembly. Breathing zone samples revealed one of the two employes exposure exceeded Ford and OSHA medical monitoring limits of one tenth fiber per cubic centimeter of sampled air. An additional bulk sample from t e clutch assembly boxes was found to contain asbestos. Disposal and handling of these boxes require special attention. Per Company and OSHA requirements, all asbestos containing waste must be handled properly to minimize creation of airborne dusts. Boxes should not be thrown into open hoppers, rather should be placed in closed, preferably sealed, containers for disposal. Refer to OSHA 29CFP1910.1001 (h) (2) for specific coverage of waste disposal.

Dear Mr. Plasters:
The bulk sample which you submitted to us on January 25 1979 has been analyzed as requested; the result follows
X-ray diffraction analysis of the sample indicated the presence of 10% chrysotile. No other forms of asbestos were detected. Our limits of detection for the various asbestos forms are 1% for chrysotile, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite, 3% for amosite, and 6% for croeidolite.
It is a pleasure to be of assistance to you. Please contact us if you have questions concerning any as pects of this report.
S incerely,
