Introduced many yean ago, lead- asbeatos pads today are employed in a variety of vibration-producing situations. For example, they arc used to dampen vibrations under a massive cooling tower above a New York City skyscraper, and to pro tect instruments housed la the Bell Telephone Laboratories building, through vrhuh rumbling trains pais daily. Willism Ginsberg Associates, ar chitects and engineer*. New York City, who specialize in the design of newspaper and other printing plants, has designed and specified lhe>e lead and asbestos isolation pads on many of the projects de signed by its office. Fort Worth Sic Tele y*rtm, and other* Tor newspaper press isolation work, leid-Afhcstos pads are con structed in sandwich form, with two outer lay era of lead, two Inner layers of asbestos, and a center steel plate to keep the sandwich stiff. After the layers are assem bled in order, the pads then art compretvd at 200 pounds per square inch and scaled on all sides with lead while compressed. The finish ed pads for newspaper press instal lations usually measure about 1H Inch thick, and 24 to l feet in length and width. However, other thicknesses and sizes are manufac tured ar.d used to help solve other vibration problems. Where presses are powered by a group drive motor, rather than by indi vidual motors for each unit, the motor is supported by separate sub structure columns, which also are isolated by pads.
