Attached is OSHA's list of 400 or more potentially hazard ous substances for which they have adopted current TLV's (Threshold Limit Value) These values are law, but are not to be confused with proposed standards. An example of an OSHA Standard is the Asbestos Standard which follows the Tables. I am passing this along, both as general information, but also in order to make sure my records are complete. Therefore, please look over this list for any chemicals which are in your area of responsibility and return a list of these chemicals to me by September 17, 1976The chemical can be in any amount, even as an impurity. Thank you for your cooperation. JCE/dg RSV 0011340 S-i 31:5% OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARDS SUBPART G--OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29. An employee's exposure to any material listed In table 0-1, G-2, or 0-3 ot this section shall be limited in accord ance with the requirements ot the follow ing paragraphs of this section. (a) Table 0-1: (1) Materials with names preceded by "C"--Ceiling Values. An employee's ex posure to any material In table O-l. the name of which is preceded by a "C" (e.g,, C Boron trlfluonde). shall at no *>> exceed the fining value given for that material in the table. (2) Other materials--8-hcur time weighted averages. An employee's expo sure to any material In table G-l. the name of which is act preceded by "C'*. In any 8-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not exceed the 8-hour time weighted average given for that material in the table. Cb) Table0-2: (1) 8-hour time weighted averages. An employee's exposure to any material listed In table 0-2, In any 8-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not exceed the 8-hour time weighted average limit given for that material in the table. (2) Acceptable ceiling concentrations. An employee's exposure to a material listed In table 0-2 shall not exceed at any time during an 8-hour shift the acceptabla ceiling concentration limit given for the material In the table, except for a time period, and up to a concentration not exceeding the maximum duration and concentration allowed in the column under "acceptable maximum peak above the acceptable celling concentration for an 8-hour shift". (3) Example. During an 8-hour work shift, an employee may be exposed to a concentration of Benzene above 25 p.pJn. (but never above 50 p.p.mJ only for a maximum period of 10 minutes. Such ex posure must be compensated by expo sures to concentrations less than 10 p.p.m. so that the cumulative exposure for the entire 8-hour woik shift does not exceed a weighted average of 10 p.p.m. (c) Table 0-3: An employee's expo sure to any material listed In table 0-3. In any 8-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not exceed the B-hour time weighted average limit given for that material in the table. (d> Computation formulae: (11 (il The cumulative exposure for an 8-hour work shift shall be computed as follows: s=c.r.-T-cr+ . . . c.r. 8 where: E is the equivalent exposure for the work ing shift. C la the concentration during any period of time T where the concentration remains constant. T la the duration in hour* of the expoeure at the concentration C. The value of E shall not exceed the 8liour time weighted average limit in table 12-19-74 Copyright C 1974 by The Btrreou ot Notional Affairs, Inc. [Sec. l910-93(d|] 55 R.SV 0011341 31:5302 REFERENCE FILE 0-1. 0-3, or 0-3 for tbe materia involved. <U> To Illustrate the formula pie scribed in subdivision (1) of this subpara graph, note that lsoamyl acetate has at 8-hour time weighted average limit o 100 p.pjn. (table 0-1). Assume that ai employee is subject to tbe followin' exposure: Two hours txposura at IfiOp.pJB. Two hours expoaun at 75 p.pjo. Pour hours expoaure at 60 p.p.m Substituting thin information in th formula, we have ax: leo+ax 7S+4X60 --------------------------------------- =61.25 p.pjn, 8 Since 81.25 p.pjn. is less than 100 p.pjn., the 8-hour time weighted average limit the exposure is acceptable. (2) (l> In case of a mixture of air con taminants an employer shall compute the equivalent exposure as follows: c, c, c. L, I,, L. Where: E* Is tbs equivalent expasurs for the mixture. Q U the concentration of a particular coo- tsalmst L Is the exposure limit for that contami nant. from table 0-1, 0-3, or 0-3. The value of E shall not exceed unity (1). (11) To Illustrate the formula pre scribed in subdivision (1) of this sub paragraph. consider tbe following exposures: Actual cmeautradoo <d t-beur expaaure Mourtlme aeereca iponn Umii k (Table Q-l)_____ . MO p.pjn... 3-Butanone (Table O-l).. Toluene (Table 0-2)......... . 40 p^a.... 200 p-pjn. Substituting in the formula, we have: 600 46 40 1.000 300 300 B. =0 500+0 .225 + 0.200 E-- =0.036 Since E. is less than unity (1), the expo sure combination la within acceptable limits. (e) To achieve compliance with para graph (a) through <d> of this section, administrative or engineering controls must first be determined and Imple mented whenever feasible. When such controls are not feasible to achieve full compliance, protective equipment or any other protective measures be used to keep the exposure of employees to air contaminants within the limits pre scribed In this section. Any equipment and/or technical measures used for this purpose must be approved for each par ticular use by a competent Industrial hygienist or other technically qualified person. Whenever respirators are used, their use shall comply with } 1910.134.
