Mr. R. J. Fischbach Westville, New Jersey Area sampling to document airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers was conducted at the Eagle Point Plant on October 14, 1981. The sampling was performed by Mr. J. E. S.chlicht, Industrial Hygiene Technician, to evaluate ambient concentrations near the gasket storage area at the storehouse. The result, as shown in the attached table, indicates that the asbestos concentration was well below the OSHA standard for occupational exposure to asbestos, which is two (2) fibers per cubic centimeter of air (f/cc), calculated as a time weighted average (TWA) for an eight-hour period. The gaskets which are supplied by New Jersey Gasket are stored beneath windows on the east Wall of the storehouse. The calculated TWA of less than 0.01 f/cc was based on a sampling period of 485 minutes. While the employes spend only a small portion of time in this area, if they had been present during the above sampling period, the employe's exposure would have been similar. The concentration during the balance of the shift was assumed to be the same in the calculation of the TWA. The "less than" indicates that the concentration was below the lower limit of detection of the chosen analytical method. Prior to receiving the analytical results, some precautionary f measures were taken. The storehouse supervisor has requested that the gasket supplier deliver the gaskets individually sealed in plastic bags. The gaskets will then be stored in this manner. Those that are not sealed are being placed-in bags by the Insulation Department. An alternate site for storage is also being investigated. The sample was collected on a membrane fiber using a calibrated air sampling pump.
