The objective was to provide an estimation of the dietary intake of fluorochemicals (FC) by local residents. The study cities were represented by Pensacola, FL, Decatur, AL and Mobile, AL. The control cities were represented by Port St. Lucie, FL, Cleveland, TN and Columbus, GA. A two person sampling team visited three grocery stores within each city to purchase the following items: ground beef, pork, chicken, hot dogs, fish, eggs, milk, bread, green beans, apples and honey. Tables 1 - 6 summarize the data for each city, and deviations to obtaining the above items are noted in the comment section of each table. When available, food items were also obtained from farmers markets and organic grocery stores. . Pace Analytical Page 1 BACK TO MAIN Sampling Methodology Sample Containers: New 1000 ml Nalgene sample containers were used for egg and milk samples. The containers were rinsed with laboratory grade methanol and Type I deionized (DI) water prior to use. All other food items were left in the original packaging and placed into zip-seal plastic bags. Sample Handling: Food items were handled in the same manner as a consumer would handle them. However, the technicians did wash their hands thoroughly prior to collecting the food items. Each food item was left in the original packaging and placed individually into zip-seal plastic bags, with the exception of the eggs and milk (or milk substitute). The eggs were cracked open and transferred to nalgene sample containers. The milk was also transferred from the original container to nalgene containers. Once the food items were properly contained, labeled and recorded on a chain of custody, they were stored in chest freezers and maintained at about minus 5C (refer to Table 7). Two freezers were used - one freezer was dedicated for the control city samples and the other for the study city samples. The exceptions to freezer storage were the apples and honey. These were stored in dedicated sample coolers. After the collection phase of the project was completed, the Pace sampling team delivered the samples directly to Centre Analytical on December 9, 2000. Deviations to the General Project Outline (GPO): The GPO specified collecting whole milk in a cardboard container. However, some of the stores only carried milk in plastic containers. In these cases, either the plastic container was purchased, and/or a substitute such as buttermilk or half-and-half cream was obtained if packaged in cardboard. The comments section on Tables 1 - 6 specify these variations.
