In classical silicosis the quarts percentage is higher, and the amount of total dust much lower than in coal miners* pneumoconiosis. Mixed forma of both groups occur, for instance, in diatomite workers. The need for more research, especially in the first ^roup, is pointed out. Author's abst. 24S Connective Tissue in Experimental Silicosis and Anthmcosls, Histochemical Foatures of Development, A. 1. Strukov and N. T. Raikhlin, A rch7~Fathor, 71, "N2-150~ (rcb. 1961), The development of the connective tissue in experimental silicosis commences with the appeoranco at the sites 0/ silicon deposition of uun-differcntUtud fibroblasts rich with ribonucleic acid, which is rapidly transformed into fibrocytcs. Apparently, in connection with the features specific to the mucopolysaccharides --component of the complex procollagen-- the surface of the collagenous fiber has weak bonds with the rest of the fiber. In the siliclous connective tissue there occur# formation of ineompiuto collagenous fibers, as a result of which they undergo considerable readjustment and hgcomu disarranged. Accumulation in the tissue of products of the collagen complex and their subsequent combination are conducive co conditions favorable for the appearance of hyslinosis. Necrosis of siliclous nodules is closely connected with poorly formed collagonoua fibers, which are produced under pathologic conditions. During experimental anthracoeU the development of sclerosis proceeds at a low rate and never reaches the degree attained in silicosis. The manifestations of hyaiinosis are also pronounced to a lesser extent, while necrosis of the fibrous-dust foci is of very rare occurrence. Of major importance In the mechanism of collagenous fiber production is the acellular type of sclerosis, Procollagen (the surface phase of collagenous fiber) is united more strongly with the remaining portion of the fiber (collastromin) and is not removed by collagennse. The disclosed features peculiar to the connective tissue in experimental silicosis and anthracosls are of Importance for the classification of certain aspects of pathogenesis in pneumoconiosis. Authors' conclusions Prevention of "Silica Shock" by Aluminum. G. W, H. Schcpars and A, J3, Delahant. Arch, Environmental Health , `J.Ts (Jan, 1961), The Intraesrdla? injection of 40 mg, of particulate quarts causes splanchnic hyperemia *nd death in guinea pigs. This silica "xhuck" can be prevented by adding from 4 to 26 mg, of colloidal aluminum hydroxide to the suspension, When precipitated aluminum hydrate is added 1 the silicon dioxide thu splanchnic vascular reaction Is intensJfivd. Mutallic aluminum parti- culetoi, oxidized or imoxldiicd, aru inadequate imtidotus against silica "shock" though capable of preventing silicosis when Inhaled us aerosols. Colloidal aluminum hytlrotldv is nontoxic on tnirscerdiac injection within a therapeutically effective dose range. This fact, coupled with its proved antidotal action against the circulatory disturbance induced by silicon dioxide, suggests that aluminum hydroxide may mitigate disabling bronchiolar spasm and pulmonary hypertension in silicotic patients, Authors' summary 17. ! t .1 rsfcv-
