Magnuson, asking me, if possible, to comply with your request for certain early papers, one by W. A. Eldridge and his associates/and one of my own. The paper of Eldridge would now be difficult to obtain in the precise form in which it was printed^ and I have not attempted to do so, since I have a carbon copy of the manuscript which was obtained directly from Eldridge many years ago. This copy did not lend itself well for reproduction, but we have typed in some of the more illegible parts of it, and I am sure it will serve your purpose. I have a few remaining reprints of the other article to which you have referred and 1 am glad to send one to you. I add another which may be of some interest to you. I think I should warn you that certain statements are made in all of these articles which were not too unsatisfactory at the tin, but would now be recognized to be in error or incomplete.. Much has happened since these articles were published, and since much research and experience have been added, it is necessary to look at the early observations with a critical eye. This is true not only of tetraethyllead, but since the advent of other alkyl lead compounds, a Considerable body of information as to the behavior of these compounds is now available. I have no doubt that you have gone carefully into the literature, since other wise you would not have been aware of the existence of the articles which you are now seeking. Thus my warning is probably unnecessary, but I proffer it only to be as helpful as possible. I shall be interested in the outcome of your researches. Cordially yours. RAKtvr Robert A.
