SOI 4p<-2396 November 6, 1974 Mr. Horace Beasley Cement Asbestos Products Company Birmingham, Alabama Dear Mr. Beasley: I contacted the ASARCO Laboratory in Salt Lake City, Utah, about a laboratory for reading our semi-annual asbestos sam ples. Mr. Robert Putnam, Superintendent of Technical Services, feels that since their laboratory is accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) their results should be accepted by any organization. According to Mr. Putnam the AIHA is one of the most respected associations of its kind. He feels that he could arrange to do our sampling and evaluate our samples for us if we wish since they normally do a yearly survey of all of ASARCO1s plants. If we still want to send our samples to an. independent testing laboratory he recommended Environmental Health Laboratories, 32740 Northwestern Highway, Farmington, Michigan 48020. As you already know Wayne Limbaugh and I attended the course taught by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health entitled "Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos" in Cincinatti, Ohio, on September 3, 1974. We were instructed in the sampling equipment and procedure, calibrations procedures, the microscope, filter preperation and mounting, and sample evaluating. We also received many hand-outs and booklets one of which was the booklet "Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos" which describes everything taught in the course in detail. About one half of the people attending the course were OSHA or NIOSH employees and the other half were people from different industries. Wayne and I agreed that it was a well taught course and that it was very beneficial to our work.
