Kehoe, Dear Dr. Kehoe: As you are aware, we have been in the habit of pasting paper notices on our drums of ETHYL fluid to cover the various requirements. At the present time, some five or six different pasters are involved. We must have the trade mark to protect our rights, we put on a warning notice in order to cover the Surgeon General's and your rules and regulations, we have a further notice to carriers to communicate with us in the event of leakage in transit, and a special notice about how to clean the drums and to ship them back to Carney's Point at the refineries. Then we have the Interstate Commerce Commission requirement of a poison label and another sticker giving the gross, tare and net weight and the cubic centimeter of lead content. There is no doubt that some of these notices become dirty and even obliterated at times in transit and when the drums are returned to us we find on numerous occasions that the pasters have come off. John Schaefer has been working on this matter and now proposes that we use a decalcomania which will stick on the drums very much better than the paper notices that are pasted on and will certainly have a much-better appearance. He has attempted to combine all of the notices on the drums into one decal, with the exception of the l.C.C. poison label which must be kept separate under their ruling, and the weight and cubic centimeters of ' lead content sticker. Attached hereto is the decal design. . used It is the intention of course to put on a new decal each time the drums are . Before agreeing to this course, however, I would thank you to please let us have your comments on same and whether you think the form of the decal, the wording (which is the same as we have always used) and the size of both the decal and the lettering fully meets with your approval. John is anxious to go ahead with this program as soon as possible and I would therefore appreciate it if you would wire me Monday if this decal should meet with your ap proval, or else write me on that date so that I receive the letter on Tuesday, of any sug gested changes. I expect to leave Tuesday afternoon about three o 'clock to spend the day after (Wednesday) at the Plant. In this same general connection, we are giving serious consideration to paint ing our drums a different color than aluminum. The aluminum paint chips off rather badly and notwithstanding the fact that we paint the drums every time they are used, some of them have a deplorable appearance upon their return from the field. John Schaefer has been experiment ing with a number of lacquer paints that the duPont Company ban supply. A lacquer paint of buff or yellow color would show up leaks just as readily as the aluminum paint and experience Dr* R. A. Kehoe, -2- 2/6/51. has indicated that the arums would he in very much better condition and have a better appear ance if we used such a color. I would also like to have your opinion on making this change which I believe would also protect our drums against rusting and still further add to their life ana check leaks. P.S. We need the enclosed decal design in order to place an order and I would appreciate it if you would please mail it bacii to me, say , by noon on Monday which should place it in our hands Tuesday morning.
