J. 07652 BULLET I N N 0. 6 0 7 July 29, 1977 PLAINTIFFS EXHIBIT AB-1 TO CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION At the Annual Meeting, those attending were advised that the friction materials industry is now coming under review by an additional federal bureau. In addition to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a new bureau--the Consumer Product Safety Commission--will be considering brake linings, in particular, they would be studying asbestos containing brake linings, and 1 would imagine clutch facings. Enclosed is a copy of a memo that was written by Mr. Jbhn Marsh, Director of Environmental Affairs at Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc., to others in the Raybestos organization. This letter indicates that brake lining will now be studied "to determine whether or not such products should be banned." The implications of such a study and the consequences of a possible ban on asbestos containing friction materials are obviously far-reaching. Based on reaction at the Annual Meeting, we will follow-up on this subject.
