It is called an "op-ed" piece because it appears opposite the editorial page. Op-eds are longer than letters to the editor and are written by experts. Over the past year, we provided op-eds on "community right-to-know," "working partnerships in the community" and "reaching out to the community." The subject of this piece is "a good neighbor getting better." The op-ed discusses a facility's manufacturing activities and its involvement in community affairs. It may be used as guidance in preparing one's own op-ed, or it may be used virtually as is with each facility manager providing appropriate information in the places denoted by boldface type. Now is an appropriate time for facility managers to write about their manufacturing operations and community outreach activities as the next round of Title III release reporting nears. The local newspaper is an excellent resource for facility managers who wish to inform citizens about industry's efforts to improve performance and increase participation in community activities. To further the public's knowledge of our industry, CMA has underwritten one video and produced another. "Big Fears... Little Risk," narrated by Walter Cronkite, was produced by the American Council of Science and Health. We are always seeking to improve plant and worker safety to ensure that employees, the residents of (name of conmunity) and the environment benefit from our presence in this community. Through the Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) process, an international chemical industry initiative, we've gone beyond the plant gate and into the community to explain to the citizens of (name of community) what we do and how we do it. In addition, we have an open invitation to the community to visit our plant and see how we make some of the building blocks of modern life.
