This fact applies to evory phase of the company's ^affaire, finances, output, additional lines, the talcing on of additional in dustries, the expansion abroad, and the developing of new products Heretofore not on the market. All of tneee represent a tremendous growth and indicate a wonderful expansion programme built upon the supreme confidence of tne busi ness of this country and the world at large. however, the most interesting phase of this wondefful expansion Is the building of the many new plants. The rapidity with which this expansion programme was launched by our President found the Engineering and Construction Department operating .in rather narrow bounds, as up to the time the programme was launched very llttlo construction work was being done. However, upon the decision to proceed, with the view of getting our plants under production early in the Summer of 19?0, the.Engineer ing Department immediately did a little expansion on its own hoolc, and increased its quarters threefold. The staff increased accordingly, and within a month the Department had reacned a staff of coma forty men, representing a_l phases in the engineering line. Engineering Staff It is ratner unusual to find an ngineering staff, oven though it may be in a large consulting concern, where all engineering work of whatever character is being taken care of in the one office, but in the office of this company there are no engineering problems nich are passed, but all are taken care of ae tr.ey are presented, regardless of their character. This means that we have an ex traordinary diversified lot of work passing through tne De urtment simultaneously, but we find that this leade to far better results, as it enables us to carry througn ail pnasea of our work to better advantage, as ail* phases can be com pared in tne same Department, which insures no Interferences or bad flow condi tions in the plant after it is completed. An extensive programme necessarily means that tha Department on a great part of the work must operate at a long range, as the location of the plants are either on the Atlantic or Paeifio seaboard, middle west or eoutn, and therefore, the work must be developed in --uch a way ae to carry Lt through accurately in t;.e field, and insure e rapid construction when the oi'k starts, however, the De partment has met all of these faetore satisfactorily, and the gr?at amount of work coming Into the office strengthens the organisation rather than weakens lt. The work now on the boards of tha Department represents expenditures which will bs divided up into the following plants, additions to plants, and reconstruction of certain-units. New Cappeau Kiln At Coffeyville, Kansas, the Department ie Installing a new cappeau kiln, re building B Pipe Line, and building a new ore crusaing plant; also rebuilding tee old No* 1 cappeau kiln. This large program represents smelter work throughout, and an outlay of 1500,000. 0007-SWP-000007012 He* Can Plant to Produce SO Million Cane Per Xear Our largest expansion is the new Can Plant which will be erected in Chicago, and will represent tne moat modern and up-to-date, automatic can plant built in the United States or the world today. This plant .till be In a building 140 X 5C0 feet, three stories hlgn, and will accommodate a nlne-llno can lay out, producing 50,000,000 or more cans per year. All types of cans .-ill be made in this plant, ranging from smallest circular and rectangular units. Later on there rill be added to this unLt, eteel icsg section, cooperage and carton section, and lithographing unit, ultimately bringing this plant up to one of the largest units and one of the most modern. New Lead Plant to be Erected Our next large unit is another Cnicago addition, which is the building of a new lead plant. This plant will represent the moat modern process in corrosion and will be houeed in a reinforced concrete building, approximately IOC x 200 feet. This building will be jartly one and three stories. The plant will hare a capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 tons of product per year. There will be installed many new and novel devices to facilitate the manufacture of tr. product developed in this ye plant. In addition to the lead plant, a modern Red Lead and Litharge plant will be con structed which will be of reinforced concrete, four stories high, accommodating four furnaces, end tne most modern red -ed working equipment available will be used. The plant will be approximately 100 feet square, and will be a very pleasing structure of the modem daylight type, and modern in. rovta-nt.s vrlll be inotalled in this -lant to facilitate the manufacture of materiel made therein. Power Station Last but not least wa nave a large power station progr-mme of some kind, and it is more tcan likely for tue present that this wl.l be in the nature of a complete rearrangement of our electric distribution system, which ill repre sent a considerable outlay. *s then contea,u.ats th.; . ^arrangement of our steam distribution and present boiler plant,, which will represent a large amount of money, but at this time it has not been decided just ho* far the boiler plant will go,- but-it undoubtedly will be taxen care of In 1920. He* Buildings on Vest Coast On the Pacific Coast at our Emeryville site, *# are building a large arehouce and office building of modern ty, e, and in addition to this e are now starting the plans for additions to ourji present factory. These additions will repre sent the most modem type of insecticide pi nts that have ever been built. The buildlnfcs will be up to dmte, fireproof structures and the machinery will rep resent a great many new improvements. Kurtner Addition to Paint and Varnish Dept. There is also being constructed in tho Paint Department a large addition and re construction to the VamiBh Department also a new mill type gum storage building 50 x 80 feet,' four storiea high. In addition there has been a rearrangement of the thinning room, filter presa room, filter cloth wash rooms, and -tacks and a 0007-SWP-000007013 new tad novel installation for the accumulation and reclaiming the fuses. This Varnish Plant, when completed, wixi represent ithout uestion the last word in construction end arrangement. . In addition we have in mind the rearrangement and extension of our lunch room and service facilities, .vhich will represent on expenditure of approximately seventy-five to one hundred thousand dollars, and wi 1 perhaps mean the build ing of a large unit to house the Service Department and at tna same time take care of the feeding end comfort of all employees. Acetic Acid Plant Being Built In add tion to this large programme at Chicago, the Department 1b completing tne plans for tne Acetic Acid' Plant which ie to be built at Bound Brook, N.J. This represents a duplicate in many ways of our most modern Acetic Acid Plant here at Chicago, which uaa been such a successful unit* There la, of course, lncoporated in this new building ->oms Improvements which naturally follows our being in the business several years. There is also contemplated nt Bound Brook additions in the Insecticides Department and Power Station work. Lithopone Plant Doubled Our next largest laprovemont, which vrl-1 also be at Chicago, is the increase of our present hlthopone Plant ISO per cent. This means a duplicate of the present modern, reinforced, daylight factory building and Black Ash Department. Io tne plant will be added four additional revolvers with all auxiliary a ulpnent and in milling department will be added two mufflea and auxiliary equip ment, enabling us to increase the capacity 150 per cent, with a possibility of increasing over this under certain conditions. Our Lithopone Plant ie, with out a question-, tna most modern and up-to-date.Lltnopone Plant in the world. The warehousing facilities in Chicago have also been taken care o. , and there wilx be built in the Spring, a five-story, mill type warehouse building known as the extension to our No. 15 warehouse. This will be of the modem mill type construction, and will represent the latest in this type of construction. The building will be used strictly'for warehousing. Our Tar Dspartmant at Chicago has bssn awarded a large reinforced concrete finishing department, whicn will be two stories nigh, with a part three stories covering 150* x 50*. This will be of modern type, and equipped with the-moot modem apparatus for tala type of building, and will great facilitate the Tar Plant production. The- building is so constructed that It can be doubled up in else when needed. 0007-SWP-000007014 \ \ $100,000 Increase in Chemical Products Department In the Chemical Products Department there is a reconstruction .rogramme which wilx pro&ably cost $100,000. This represents addition to building No. 511, wnich is a teo-atory mill type buildinE covering approximately 60* x 50'. In the Beta Plant quite an expansion is being made. This addition does not represent much additional floor space, but improvements to present structure. for the Paint Division at Chicago, the Department is building a sew enamel de partment rhich represents a four-story r inforced conaste, sunlight factory, wnich is going to he the latest ord in jaint factory construction and design. This is the company's first plant in whicn direct connected chain drive upon the mlxls haa been arranged for, and there hae been introduced into this Deport ment some novelties which will no doubt greatly facilitate high-claas paint making. ' Newark It Newark, the Department has made plans for addition to the B Department which represents a modern layout, and also large improvements in the present power etation, but in addition to this work walcn is now under way, wo are de signing a five-story reinforced concrete warehouse, approximately 150* x SC1, and a $100,000 power house addition for Newark. t Detroit At Detroit the Department is making several additions end reconctructi:n work which will improve the Insecticide snd Arsenic Acid Plant at t:.at city. There has also been added piite a number of mill a to increase its capacity. . Building Going on Rapidly The foregoing outlines in a general say the large expansion work rhlch the com pany has undertaken up to this time, and it le almost assured tnat there will be added to tnls programme quite large end subatantial increase, and the carry ing on of this greet amount of building is going to be done under high . ressure, me the Department expects to have these buildings ready for machinery in the next three' or four months, and get machinery installed a cou; le of months after, so as to throw all the plants into production the early ; art or the middle of the Summer.
