The performance of a painl job, regardless of the rnafenaU usedr is dependent on the cleanliness and rmoothnesc of the surface and the conditions under which the'paint rs appfiedl.
We have cullined below the basic requirements and Hava indicated the typical preparalian-of-sutface spectflcafions that have been found adequate:
1. Dirt and foreigr matter must be removed. Loose dirt may be removed by blowing clean with air pressure or bristle brushes. It is im portant that surface deposits of oil or grease are no: spread over additional; areas in the cleaning process.
2. Glossy Surfaces on old paint films should be roughened to provide a "tooth". This may be accomplished iby sanding the surface or applying S-W Preparite.
3. Mold or Mildew must be removed com pletely from the surface. Use trisodium phos phate solution (6 oz. per gallon) or a proprie tary detergent Rinse thoroughly with clear water and allow to dry before painting.
4. Oil and Grease should be removed with mineral, spirits or S-W Exolvent.
5. Rj s I and Mill Scale--These can be re moved by sandblasting, flame cleaning or wire brushing (manual or power). Blasting to white metal produces the best possible surface for painitirigfc Then application of the priming coat of pair.t should be made on the same day the surface is cleaned and, in the case of sandblast ing, within 2 to 3ihours.
6. Eetericir Wood must be clean and dry. No painting to be done immediately after a rain or during, rainy weather, or when the tempera ture isijiibelawi! 50lF. Knots and pitch streaks shall lie scraped or burned, then coated with shellac before priming coat is applied. All nail holes pr small openings shall be filled with White Lead Putty after priming coat has dried.
7. Exterior Brick, Stucco and Concrete shall be free from dirt, and; loose or excess mortar. New concrete, brick and stucco shall be allow ed to cure at least 6 months before painting. If necessary to paint sooner, treat surface with zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water), brushing surface free of loose crystals when dry. Eta not paint after a rain but allow several days for thorough drjting-
8. Structural Steel shall be cleaned free of mill scale, rust and foreign matter by (1) sand blasting, (2) flame cleaning, (3) wire brushing or (4) scraping. Any grease shall be removed with solvent. Loose and scaling paint shall be scraped and wire brushed to sound metal. Dust and dirt should be removed by dry brushing or air blast prior to painting. No paint shall be applied ovei a damp or hosted surface, or when the temperature is below 50nF.
9. Galvanized Iron shall be cleaned thor oughly with solvent to remove grease, residue and corrosion products on the surface. Satis factory preparation may be obtained with chemical washes used as directed by uie manu facturer. All galvanized iron shall be given a special primer such as S-W Galvanized Iron Primer, Galvite or Gripclad Primer. Galvan ized iron that has been exposed Lc the weather for long periods of time and shows rust shall be primed with a metal protective primer such as Kromik Metal Primer.
10. Copper Surfaces -- In general, most oil paints will adhere satisfactorily to copper, providing the surface is cleaned free of dirt and foreign matter.
M, Interior Plaster Walls must be allowed to dry thoroughly, usually requiring at least 30 days before painting. Ventilation v/hile drying is essential and in cold, damp weather, rooms must be heated. Damaged places shall be re paired with Plastic Patch.
12. Interior Brick and Concrete must be thor oughly seasoned. Ventilation while drying is essential. Prior to painting, the surface shall be given a zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water). When dry, the surface shall be brushed completely free of loose crystals.
13. Interior Woodwork and Trim--All finish ing lumber and flooring shall be delivered protected from the weather and stored on the
premises in dry, warm rooms to prevent ab sorption of moisture, shrinkage and rough ening of the wood before finishing.
All surfaces shall be sanded smooth, with the grain, and never across it. Surface blemishes shall be corrected and the room cleaned of dust before proceeding with finishing coats.

Wall Primer and Sealer
This product primes and seals walls and ceilings against suction and enables succeeding coats to cover properly, evenly and vUth greater ease. It is supplied ready for use on interior wall surfaces such as smooth, sand-finish and textured plasters, wallboard, brick and concrete.
Comes i n white only land may be tinted to a suitable ground color with First Quality Tinting Colors or Kem, Tinting Colors.

Color Harmony Flat-Tone
A washable, odorless, alkyd flat enamel that produces a rich velvety finish fqir interior walls and ceilings of plaster, wallboard, masionry and wood. It is available in a range of colors and color combinations suitable for homes, offices, schools, hospitals, churches, stores and -factories. Additional co ors may be obtained by the use of Kem Tinting Colors.
For best; results on ne:'w plaster, the surface should be primed with "Wall Primeir and Sealer. On new woodwork, however, 'ifcoloc Harmo ay Flat-Tone is self-priming.

Color Harmony 5emi-l.ustre i
An odorless, alkyd, satin-finish, interior enamel. It levels without brush mprks, covers well and dries with a pleasing half-gloss sheen. Color Harmony Semi-Lustre comes in the same colors as Flat-Tone, thus making possible matching colors for Walls and woodwork.
This product produces a highly washable finish that seals outdirt and grease completely. It should be applied
over Wall Primer and Sealer on new plaster, but should be used as its own undercoat on new wood.

Kem-Glo Enamel
A superb, dull-finish enamel for walls, ceilings, all woodwork and trim. It gives surfaces a rich lustre that looks and washes like baked enamel. Kem-Glo is sup plied in 22 standard colors which may be extended to 130 colors by adding a single tube of Kem Tinting Color per gallon.
Two coats of Kem-Glo Enamel should be used on new plaster and wood. No primer and sealer or undercoater is required.
Application by brush, roller or spray--dries to recoat in 4-5 hours. Covers approximately 400 sq. ft. per gallon.
Kem-Glo Velvet
A new, velvet-flat enamel for walls and finest wood work, cabinets, etc. This makes possible a matching sheen, as well as matching color, for watlsand woodwork.
Kem-Glo Velvet is furnished in white and black only. The white may be tinted with Kem Tinting Colors. It dries in 3-4 hours and washes like baked enamel.

Enameloid
A fine-quality, full-gloss enamel for walls, woodwork or metal. This enamel produces a durable finish suitable for exterior as well as interior use. It is available in white and a wide range of standard colors.

Savo-Lile Undercoater
This undercoater is designed as an intermediate coat over Save-Lite Primer and Sealer in three-coat work on masonry. It is an excellent first coat over old paint in a two-coat system where the final coat is one of the Save-Lite finishes. It is also recommended as a first coat on new wood. Save-Lite Undercoater can be drysanded, if necessary, and its use assures a smoother, more uniform appearance of the finished work.

Save-life White
This is the mill white to use for normal service in factories, schools, offices, etc. It is a fume-resistant, non-yellowing white with excellent light-reflecting pro perties. It is furnished in Flat, Eg-She! and Gloss finish. The Flat and Eg-Shel have the necessary opacity to hide fully in one coat. The Flat gives maximum diffu sion of light, which is an advantage from the standpoint of illumination. Spraying Flat White, B58 W 6, espe cially designed for large-scale spray application, pro duces a minimum of spray fog.
Save-Lite Eg-Shcl also gives excellent light diffusion (for glare-free illumination) with the advantage of

An intensely white, synthetic enamel of the highest quality and maximum light reflecting value (90%). The gloss produces an attractive, durable, tile-like sur face, resistant .to moisture, mold and mild chemical fumes. Especially recumnierided for textile mills, paper mills, food plants, distilleries, laundries, and other plants where moisture resistance and sanitation are important. Available in Eg-Shel and Gloss Finish.

Kem Fume and Moisture Resisting Save-life White
This lis a lead-free, chemical-resisting mill white with a special synthetic vehicle. It is resistant to moisture and is not discolored by relatively strong concentrations of hydrogen sulphidd, chlorine and ammonia fumes. It is a true Save-Lite; in whiteness and non-yellowing properties Available, in Eg-Shcl and Gloss Finish. To be applied only over iSeiyc-Lite Undercoater.

Cold Storage Semi-Gloss White
A special type of white paint for use in cotcl-storage areas. Dries hard in approximately 72 hours. After that time. Fumes that would contaminate food are no longer given off. This contrasts with conventional oil paints which give off noticeable fumes many days after ap plication in closed areas.
Use one or two coats, as required, to cover. Brush directly on the surface without primer or undercoater. Ventilate enclosed space during drying period. Covers 250 sq. ft. per gallon.
Ixolvewt
A paint thinner of good solvent power, satisfactory for thinning oil and alkyd paints --superior to mineral spirits.
Flat-Rite Enamel Undercoater
The exceptional smoothness and hiding power of this undercoater contribute greatly to the quality of the enamel finish applied over it. Flat-Rite is ground to such fineness that painters mix it freely with gloss enamels to secure varying; degrees of satin finish preferred by the client. Due to this clean, fine grinding, the need for sanding between coats is greatly reduced.

Kem-Namel Snow White Gloss
For interior and exterior use. Available only in white.

Mar-Not Varnish
This is our highest grade interior varnish for floors and woodwork. Tough, water-, heat- and acid-resistant. It comes in two finishes--full gloss and satin finish.
Application by brush or spray--dries dust-free in 2 hours. It is hard enough to walk on lightly in 16 hours and can be recoated in 14 hours. Covers 550 sq. ft. per gallon.
Rexpar Varnish
Best quality spar varnish. Its tough, elastic film is resistant to sun, moisture and weather. Recommended for all outside varnished surfaces, and interior surfaces such as sills, sash, casings, etc., where there is an excess of moisture.

Gym Floor Finish
Formulated specifically to withstand wear and tear on gymmasium floors. It is a double-action finish, as it not only hardens the wood by penetration, but forms a tough surface film that minimizes skidding, tracking and burning by rubber-soled shoes. It is also excellent to use on all types of wood floors subject to extra-heavy traffic. May be buffed, after drying 24 hours, to provide an even, velvet sheen.

S-W Paste Wood Filler A dependable material well adapted to the practical

Sher-Gide Traffic Marking Paint This product combines high visibility with long life,
making possible effective guide-line traffic control in practically all industrial and commercial situations. SW Oil Stain
For enriching the appearance of natural wood finishes prior to varnishing, the use of oil stains is the method generally employed. S-W penetrating oil stains produce clean, sharp colors on new wood, are nonbleeding and easy to handle. They bring out the full beauty and in tensity of the grain and are recommended for finishing the finest interior woodwork, such as paneling, exposed beams* floors. For exterior as well as interior use. Available in a number of colors.
Application by brush and subsequent wiping to secure desired effect. Covers 600 to 800 sq. ft. per gallon.
Requirements for Metal Protection
Water and atmospheric fumes promote the corrosion which destroys iron and steel. The protective film, there fore, must be highly impervious to these dements and tenacious in maintaining a continuous film.
The priming coat must (1) contain pigments which retard or inhibit corrosion, (2) be hard enough to re sist abrasion, andyet (3) elastic enough to accommodate the expansion and contraction of metal.
The finish coat must protect the priming coat. The type of paint and number of coats required depend upon the nature and the severity of the exposure.

Kromik* Metal Primer
An effective primer for iron and. steel. It prevents rust through the inhfbitive action of its pigment--a carefully balanced combination of zinc chromate, red lead, zmc. oxide and iron oxide.
Although Kromik Metal Primer is formulated, as a first coat, to be covered with finish coats of Mctalastic or Kem A fl& A, the protection afforded without rccoating is equivalent to the best top coats --a great advan tage where steel must stand for long periods of time before t le field coat is applied. Krornik is a good pi imer for gahanized iron that has been weathered to the point o! rusting, but is not recommended for new gal vanized iron.

Kem Kromik Primer

SWP Exterior Undercoafer No. 450 Ready-tn-use SWP Undercoater No. 450 primes and
seals badly weathered and sheltered surfaces. It dries to a idull finish that blends perfectly with the final coat of paint. When the finish coat is other than white, SWP Undercoater No. 450 should be tinted with Kem Tinting Colors or S-W First Quality Tinting Colors to approxi mately the color of the final coat.
Application by brush -- allow to dry 2-4 days before recoafeirtg. Covers 450 to 500 sq. ft. per gallon.
SWP Gloss One-Coat White 476 A special formulation of SWP for a one-coat job over
previously painted surfaces in good condition. It comes in white only and should not be tinted or mixed with other paints. For best results, use only over light colors --white, ivory, cream or light gray.

SWP Gloss Trim and Tinting White 473 The ideal white for painting trim where the body of
the house is of brick or stone construction. Its chalkresistant pigmentation makes it most desired for such surfaces. It is also the recommended base for making light tints with the addition of Kem Tinting Colors (except Magenta 415, Green 404 and Orange 401), S-W First Quality Tinting Colors' or with regular SWP colors, except SolTast Red.

Primer No, 61 primes and seals new or weathered, stucco, concrete, brick, cement block, asbestos shingles and other masonry surfaces. It is highly resistant to alkali and. when properly applied, produces an excellent primer for these surfaces. Not to be used for priming wood.

S-W Concrete Floor Primer
For use on new or: unpainted concrete floors as an undercoat for S-W Porch and Floor Enamel. It resists the alkali. always present in concrete, which attacks oil paints and enamels,

S-W Porch and Floor Enamel
A tough, Iiard-wcai mg, weather-resistant coating for exterior and interior surfaces such as floors, porches, stairs, steps, etc. Suitable for use on wood, concrete and metal. E rics ready for use the day following application. When used on new or unpainted concrete, it is necessary to etch and neutralize the concrete and apply a prime coat of S-W Concrete Floor Primer as directed on the package.

Loxon Masonry Surfacer
A surfacing material designed for use under Loxon Basement Wall Paint or Loxon Exterior Masonry Paint. The surfacer fills and smooths the crevices and roughness of unpainted concrete masonry and concrete block in preparation for the finish coat.
S-W Mildew Resistant Additive
Sherwin-Williams Mildew Resistant Additive is for use in areas where mildew' is prevalent arid extra pro tection is needed against discoloration. When using Mildew Resistant Additive in SWP House; Paint, always add it to the undercoat as well as to succeeding coats. SWP Trim Colors possess mildew-resisting qualities, therefore do not require Mildew Resistant Additive.
S-W Shingle Stain
S-W Shingle Stain is designed for use on wood shingles where a stain rather than a painted finish is desired. Formulated from special oils, it adds to the life of the shingles as well as providing decorative value.
Application by dipping or brush. Covers approxi mately 150 sq. ft. per gallon.
S-W Redwood Color fast Stain A pigmented stain designed to give uniform color and
appearance to new or weathered redwood and Western red cedar. Two coats of Redwood Color Fast Stain reduce the natural color variations in these woods and protect against deterioration. When the pigmented strin has weathered away, a new coat of stain can be applied without iurther treatment of the surface. This is not the case with varnish-type, natural wood finishes which must be sanded off when the finish is renewed.

S-W Wafer Repellent*
A clear, transparent silicone coating for above-grade masonry. If prevents moisture from penetrating the surface, thus pitventing efflorescence, cracking and spalling during the freeze-thaw cycle. Does not discolor the surface and permits normal passage of air through the pores.
Loxon interior Masonry Paint
For exterior masonry of all kinds--brick, poured con crete. concrete block, stucco, transite and asbestos shingles. Loxon is a durable latex paint, especially formulated for beauty and permanence on exterior masonry surfaces. It adheres firmly, yet permits mois ture to escape without damage to the film. Available in white and colors.

Painter Craft Quali-Kote Quali-Kote is : the professional painter's latex-base
pant for walls and ceilings. It produces a high-grade, velvet-smooth'finish which, when cured, is completely washable. This product may be specified for residences, schools, hospitals, hotels, stores and offices --wherever long wear and low maintenance costs are important.
Quali-Kote is available in a number of attractive colors, and many additional colors can be obtained by simple intermixes or by the addition of Kem Tinting Colors. The line includes a Special Ceiling Flat White designed to; give the desired flat or matte finish for ceilings.

Pointer Craft Fast-Dri* Floor Sealer
This is a ready-mixed, latex-base, stippling material that is washable and durable. It is intended for use on plaster, wallboard, inside masonry and previously painted surfaces. Small plaster cracks, taped wallboard seams and minor surface defects are easily hidden by using this paint. S-W Texture Paint requires no primer, and on coat covers most surfaces. Many beautiful, decorative colors; are possible by the addition of Kem Tinting Colors (do not use oil colors). A finish coat of Quali-Kote or Super Kem^Tone in selected color may also be applied, if desired.

a. Apply an even layer of S-W Joint Filler, using 5-inch broad knife. Fill the joint completely, leaving additional material on either side in which to imbed the tape.
b. Bed an approved perforated paper tape (folded at corners) into the joint filler, centered on. the joint full length. Run the length of the joint with broad knife, forcing tape deep into the joint filler.

Dry-wall construction is of interest as a building technique where low cost is a factor. After a long period of study anal testing, Sherwin-Williams has developed a finishing system that gives dry-wall construction a uniform, satisfactory appearance closely approaching that of cbnvmtional plaster.
d. Allow to dry overnight. Then apply a top coat of Joint Filler to nailheads and joints. The top coat shall be perfectly smooth and faired into the ad joining wall surface, without ridges or trowel marks of any kind.
c. When dry, the entire joint area and all nailheads shall be sanded with medium sandpaper, wherever necessary, to obtain a perfectly smooth piece of work, ready for application of finishing material.
