We have cullined below the basic requirements and Hava indicated the typical preparalian-of-sutface spectflcafions that have been found adequate: 1. Dirt and foreigr matter must be removed. Loose dirt may be removed by blowing clean with air pressure or bristle brushes. It is im portant that surface deposits of oil or grease are no: spread over additional; areas in the cleaning process. 2. Glossy Surfaces on old paint films should be roughened to provide a "tooth". This may be accomplished iby sanding the surface or applying S-W Preparite. 3. Mold or Mildew must be removed com pletely from the surface. Use trisodium phos phate solution (6 oz. per gallon) or a proprie tary detergent Rinse thoroughly with clear water and allow to dry before painting. 4. Oil and Grease should be removed with mineral, spirits or S-W Exolvent. 5. Rj s I and Mill Scale--These can be re moved by sandblasting, flame cleaning or wire brushing (manual or power). Blasting to white metal produces the best possible surface for painitirigfc Then application of the priming coat of pair.t should be made on the same day the surface is cleaned and, in the case of sandblast ing, within 2 to 3ihours. 6. Eetericir Wood must be clean and dry. No painting to be done immediately after a rain or during, rainy weather, or when the tempera ture isijiibelawi! 50lF. Knots and pitch streaks shall lie scraped or burned, then coated with shellac before priming coat is applied. All nail holes pr small openings shall be filled with White Lead Putty after priming coat has dried. 7. Exterior Brick, Stucco and Concrete shall be free from dirt, and; loose or excess mortar. New concrete, brick and stucco shall be allow ed to cure at least 6 months before painting. If necessary to paint sooner, treat surface with zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water), brushing surface free of loose crystals when dry. Eta not paint after a rain but allow several days for thorough drjting- 8. Structural Steel shall be cleaned free of mill scale, rust and foreign matter by (1) sand blasting, (2) flame cleaning, (3) wire brushing or (4) scraping. Any grease shall be removed with solvent. Loose and scaling paint shall be scraped and wire brushed to sound metal. Dust and dirt should be removed by dry brushing or air blast prior to painting. No paint shall be applied ovei a damp or hosted surface, or when the temperature is below 50nF. 9. Galvanized Iron shall be cleaned thor oughly with solvent to remove grease, residue and corrosion products on the surface. Satis factory preparation may be obtained with chemical washes used as directed by uie manu facturer. All galvanized iron shall be given a special primer such as S-W Galvanized Iron Primer, Galvite or Gripclad Primer. Galvan ized iron that has been exposed Lc the weather for long periods of time and shows rust shall be primed with a metal protective primer such as Kromik Metal Primer. 10. Copper Surfaces -- In general, most oil paints will adhere satisfactorily to copper, providing the surface is cleaned free of dirt and foreign matter. M, Interior Plaster Walls must be allowed to dry thoroughly, usually requiring at least 30 days before painting. Ventilation v/hile drying is essential and in cold, damp weather, rooms must be heated. Damaged places shall be re paired with Plastic Patch. 12. Interior Brick and Concrete must be thor oughly seasoned. Ventilation while drying is essential. Prior to painting, the surface shall be given a zinc sulphate wash (3 lbs. per gallon of water). When dry, the surface shall be brushed completely free of loose crystals. 13. Interior Woodwork and Trim--All finish ing lumber and flooring shall be delivered protected from the weather and stored on the premises in dry, warm rooms to prevent ab sorption of moisture, shrinkage and rough ening of the wood before finishing. All surfaces shall be sanded smooth, with the grain, and never across it. Surface blemishes shall be corrected and the room cleaned of dust before proceeding with finishing coats. This product produces a highly washable finish that seals outdirt and grease completely. It should be applied over Wall Primer and Sealer on new plaster, but should be used as its own undercoat on new wood. Kem-Glo Enamel A superb, dull-finish enamel for walls, ceilings, all woodwork and trim. It gives surfaces a rich lustre that looks and washes like baked enamel. Kem-Glo is sup plied in 22 standard colors which may be extended to 130 colors by adding a single tube of Kem Tinting Color per gallon. Two coats of Kem-Glo Enamel should be used on new plaster and wood. No primer and sealer or undercoater is required. Application by brush, roller or spray--dries to recoat in 4-5 hours. Kem-Glo Velvet A new, velvet-flat enamel for walls and finest wood work, cabinets, etc. This makes possible a matching sheen, as well as matching color, for watlsand woodwork. These paints are manufactured only in white and are especially formulated to retain, their whiteness for a lung period of time. The Save-Lite White products are furnished in three types --Save-Lite, Kern Save-Lite and Kem Fume and Moisture Resisting Save-Lite. Savo-Lile Undercoater This undercoater is designed as an intermediate coat over Save-Lite Primer and Sealer in three-coat work on masonry. Save-life White This is the mill white to use for normal service in factories, schools, offices, etc. It is a fume-resistant, non-yellowing white with excellent light-reflecting pro perties. It is furnished in Flat, Eg-She! and Gloss finish. The Flat and Eg-Shel have the necessary opacity to hide fully in one coat. The Flat gives maximum diffu sion of light, which is an advantage from the standpoint of illumination. Spraying Flat White, B58 W 6, espe cially designed for large-scale spray application, pro duces a minimum of spray fog. Cold Storage Semi-Gloss White A special type of white paint for use in cotcl-storage areas. Dries hard in approximately 72 hours. After that time. Fumes that would contaminate food are no longer given off. This contrasts with conventional oil paints which give off noticeable fumes many days after ap plication in closed areas. Use one or two coats, as required, to cover. Brush directly on the surface without primer or undercoater. Ventilate enclosed space during drying period. Covers 250 sq. ft. per gallon. Ixolvewt A paint thinner of good solvent power, satisfactory for thinning oil and alkyd paints --superior to mineral spirits. Flat-Rite Enamel Undercoater The exceptional smoothness and hiding power of this undercoater contribute greatly to the quality of the enamel finish applied over it. Flat-Rite is ground to such fineness that painters mix it freely with gloss enamels to secure varying; degrees of satin finish preferred by the client. Covers 550 sq. ft. per gallon. Rexpar Varnish Best quality spar varnish. Its tough, elastic film is resistant to sun, moisture and weather. Sher-Gide Traffic Marking Paint This product combines high visibility with long life, making possible effective guide-line traffic control in practically all industrial and commercial situations. Self-Polishing Wax has been certified by the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., as a satisfactory floor coating and finishing material for rubber tile, linoleum, asphalt til>*varnished wood, METAL protective finishes SW Oil Stain For enriching the appearance of natural wood finishes prior to varnishing, the use of oil stains is the method generally employed. S-W penetrating oil stains produce clean, sharp colors on new wood, are nonbleeding and easy to handle. They bring out the full beauty and in tensity of the grain and are recommended for finishing the finest interior woodwork, such as paneling, exposed beams* floors. For exterior as well as interior use. Available in a number of colors. Application by brush and subsequent wiping to secure desired effect. Covers 600 to 800 sq. ft. per gallon. Requirements for Metal Protection Water and atmospheric fumes promote the corrosion which destroys iron and steel. The protective film, there fore, must be highly impervious to these dements and tenacious in maintaining a continuous film. The priming coat must (1) contain pigments which retard or inhibit corrosion, (2) be hard enough to re sist abrasion, andyet (3) elastic enough to accommodate the expansion and contraction of metal. The finish coat must protect the priming coat. The type of paint and number of coats required depend upon the nature and the severity of the exposure. EXTERIOR finishes SWP Noose Paint SWP is the well-known brand name of Sherwin- Williams1 line of exterior house paints which includes a number of specific formulations as follows: SWP Gloss Paint SWP Gloss, available in white and colors, is a modern, ready-to-use exterior paint of highest quality. This famous product assures the architect of maximum dura bility and lasting beauty on exterior wood, metal and masonry. For tinting, use SWP Trim and Tinting White 473 (ace below). Bed an approved perforated paper tape (folded at corners) into the joint filler, centered on. the joint full length. Run the length of the joint with broad knife, forcing tape deep into the joint filler. a3i' Scrape off all excess, making sure none is left on the tape to harden. v DRY-WALL c.
