Dear Mr. Cane* I send you herewith a somewhat lengthy communication for Mr. Bevan, which 1 should he pleased to have you transmit to him. If it is quite clear to you, and you wish to reduce its length, pleas feel free to do so. I have tried to make it specific and precise * It is as follows t - 'll) Believe the only useful procedure is to supply unleaded gasoline and am doing all I can to have this done. (2) A stove with a special burner that decomposes tetraethyl lead and collects the decomposition products is used hy the American armed forces outside this country. Whether all units have been supplied is doubtful, but general use is contemplated except within this country whcse unleaded fuel is available. (j>) So far as is known,no instructions have been issued by military authorities for using leaded fuel in ordinary stoves. (4) I advise the following minimum precautions! (a) Flue gas must always be carried to outside. (b) Areas in which cooking is done should be open to the outside as fully as possible to provide maximum dilution of fumes. (c) Food must not be broiled, roasted, or toasted in direct contact with open flame. (d) All food put into ovens through which free combustion products are carried must be cooked in covered con tainers * (e) Cooking utensils exposed to flame or fume must be cleaned up in such maimer as not to contaminate food or the wash-water used to clean other utensils. (f) Burners and other surfaces (oven) exposed to combustlon products, must be cleaned up in such manner as not to contaminate kitchen and contents, (g) Extra parts must be supplied to replace those with plugged orifices.
