MINUTES OF THE SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING SHERATON - BLACKSTONE HOTEL CHICAGO, ILLINOIS October 25, 1971 Mr. F. H. FEDERAL LEGISLATION This subject was discussed at great length by both the committee members and the plant personnel in attendance. A film produced by the National Association of Manufacturers and a slide program provided by Mr. Zimmerman both involving the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were viewed and discussed by those present. The plant personnel felt that both items would be of considerable value for use at the plant level in introducing OSHA to the supervisory personnel. On a motion made, seconded and passed, the secretary was requested to distribute information to all plant managers on the recommended procedure for securing a print of the NAM film for showing at their plant. A second motion was made, seconded and unanimously approved to direct the chairman to request additional funds from the Board of Directors for the production of the slide program In a quantity to permit its sale to every member company plant. The production of this program with the addition of ten new slides depicting a simulated OSHA inspection at a gypsum plant could be produced and offered for sale to the membership at a cost of approximately $15.00 each. This meeting has, therefore, been moved from Fort Dodge, Iowa to the New Jersey - Philadelphia area, due to accessibility at this time of year. Meeting dates and locations following the spring 1972 meeting will be reviewed and decided upon at the next meeting. In conjunction with the revised meeting format the committee also reviewed the possibility of securing some form of passout material to be given to each person in attendance at the seminar to serve as a constant reminder of our industry's emphasis on safety. On motion made, seconded and unanimously approved, the secretary was directed to secure the passout pens previously approved for use at the Safety Banquets. (This item was recorded in the minutes of the May 25, 1971 Safety Corrmittee meeting). 3. INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE . The chairman opened the discussion of this topic by reporting his recent activities in conjunction with EPA. The chairman noted that special attention should be given to any phases of the members operations which may involve the presence of toxic materials. This subject was carried on the agenda for future committee review and discussion. 4. MINE SAFETY - RESCUE PROGRAM The secretary reported on the activities conducted in connection with this program since the last meeting. It was the decision of those present that no further action could be taken without conferring with both the Manufacturing and Mining Committee and legal counsel. On motion made, seconded and approved, Mr. F. H. Zimmerman was appointed to confer with the M & M Committee and report back to the Safety Committee at its next meeting. This item was carried on the agenda. 5. ASSOCIATION ANNUAL PLANT SAFETY CONTEST PROGRAM The committee thoroughly reviewed the Association annual plant safety contest program. The two main points of concern during the discussion were: a) The request by member company gypsum facilities, not engaged in manufacturing to be included in the program b) The necessity of changing the contest and our industry's reporting methods to comply with both the Bureau of Mines and OSHA requirements. 1?..CEP.
