TRADE PRODUCTS SECTION NOVEMBER 1959 OIL PRODUCTS Hansa Yellows --We have seen our Florida exposures of the new YW-129 Empress Yellow from Imperial versus YW-1, YW-125, duPont Dalamar Yellow YT717D and Imperial X2866 and find that YW-129 is superior to all these pigments for color retention. These pigments were exposed in the Japalae Lemon Yellow Y-1270 and also a very light yellow similar to Spred Satin Cheer. The striking result is the superiority of the YW-129 over chrome yellow. On our next run of Japalae color cards the words "interior only" will be removed for Y-1270 and Y-1271. With the use of YW-129, YW-127 is now a discontinued pigment and should not be stocked in any plant. In the future we will attempt to make a 318 line base out of YW-129 and discontinue the purchasing of the hansa flush color YW-127. Speed Wall Alkyd Flat --We have reformulated all the colors that contained lead to use hansa yellow. These are: Y-4705-D Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Tea Rose Y-4741-B Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Lemon Y-4748-A Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Horizon Y -4755-B Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Sunlight Y-4757-C Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Honeydew / Y-4759-C Speed Wall Alkyd Fiat - Asparagus Y-4750-C Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Klondike Blue Y -4761 -D Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Venice Green Y-4765-C Speed Wall Alkyd Flat - Corsage We now have three complete lines on a lead-free basis; Japalae, Spred Lustre and Speed Wall Alkyd Flat. Recently we issued a bulletin to all plant superintendents explaining what 318 line shading colors contain lead' and which colors could how be used in our lead-free formulas. Extreme caution should be exercised in the shading of interior "Y" line products since many more states will be putting lead-free laws into effect in 1960. The following basis must not be used in interior trade sales products: * 318-G-2 * 318-Y-i 318-Y-77 * 318-G-3 * 318-Y-2 * 318-Y-lll * 318-G-48 * 318-Y-22 318-Y-118 318-R-145 318-Y-40 318-Y-120 318-R-167 318-Y-48 * Active now in trade sales products. Spred Lustre -- Some of our plants have experienced some problems with low gloss of Spred Lustre made from isophthalic alkyds. This is due to poorer wetting properties of the lower solids a'lkyd. Considerable work has been done in those plants involved. Several effective measures have been developed to control this effect and current efforts are being devoted to selecting the most optimum control. At present elimination of calcium driers along with the use of a very small quantity of V-38 ester gum cold cut is most effective. J. Southwick GLD373 75
