INGZRSOLL-RAND COMPAMT Cameron Pump Division P.0. Box 486 Phillipsburg, Dm Jersey 08885 ATTESTIOHt Mr. B. Rash REFERENCE: Available non-asbestos materials for Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gaskets Daar Elmers There ara aavaral non-asbastos aatariala which Flexitallic can usa in placa of asbestos, in tha aanufactura of thair spiral wound gaskets. However, lika asbestos, thay bava limitations which ara datarainad by pressure, temperature, and joint de sign consideration. We can offer PTFE, which has a temperatore limitation of 500F and which is almost chemically inert. Another non-asbestos notarial would be Flexicarb (flexible graphite), which ham a temperature limit of approximately 940F in an oxidising atmos phere and 5600F in a reducing atmosphere. Xt lika PIPE, has good resistance to many chemicals and acids. A third possible non-asbastos materisl we usa is a ceramic manufactured by Carborundum. This material has a temperature limitation of 2000F, and has some chemical resistance. How ever, we have had limited and different field usage. That is to say some customers have had good success while others have had poor performance. Xt is important to note that all of the above materials have basically fixed gasket seating stresses. Flexitallic has developed a non-asbestos mica based smterial which we believe closely assimilates asbestos. Xt has been successfully tested by the U.S. Navy in a high pressure, high temperature boiler (1150 psi, 1000F), and in the near future will be specified as a replacement for the present asbestos used by the Navy on gaskets manufactured to MXb-G-21032. oti**AmpKAMT *<i90xTm.ounf+**. tcxas - *no*c ioav-a - rwxmo-mo-mm los AMUurs *a*t: stmuct laxm OArve. Xngersoll-(and Company qt 2 Because this material is available and can be used in varying thicknesses, we can in fact vary gasket seating stress. This is an important point, since Xngersoll-Rand specifies several different gasket seating stresses for oust of their gasket requirements. Oar estimation is that it will cost out at about l.S tines the present asbestos filled gaskets. We have not yet deter mined a Flaxitallic tradename for this material, therefore, we simply refer to it as Flexitallic HA. Ms trust this information will be of some value. If we can be of further assistance, please advise Sincerely, r. J. turdrial \ i \ i \ I }- J
