The work carried out includes consultation, measurement of industrial contaminants, analysis of contaminants (they rent laboratory apace within Mellon Institute and staff it themselves), and a small amount of animal toxicology testing (using rabbits and mice). They carry out literature searches, set up medical surveys, help with location of suitable personnel, and conduct training courses for physicians, curses and industrial hygienists. Their Publications Department produces a monthly Industrial Health Digest and occasional bulletins. (Historically, the I.H.F. was started ia 193S by several corporations as a Fellowship within Mellon Institute. Its purpose was to study occupational diseases, and the bulk of the work was directed towards silicosis. The scope of work expanded from this small base. When Mellon Institute merged with Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1968, it divested itself of all Fellowships. The I.H.F. then moved to its present site in Shadyside.) Vestimghouse has a Corporate membership in Che I.H.F. at $2,400 per annum. In addition, the Corporate ContributionsCommittee approved a grant of 15,000 to be paid over two years, 1977 and 1978.
