A threatened sodium bisulfite shortage in January caused
consideration of the Manufacture of
sulfite*
In the course of this short study* a reasonably satisfactory procese
vac outlined but the product did not equal current standards. Gonse-
quentlyjwas of no Immediate interest* The bisulfite shortage did

A study of the manufacture of Pigment Green B omitting the bisulfite ester step has shown that a marketable product vas Obtained by atrlking a eopperas/oxalio acid solution into an alkaline solution of nitroso-B-n&phthol* After heat development at the boil and pro* ceasing in the nomal manner* a product was Obtained which was yUo*9 strong (+ SffJ.snd toll *#n dried snd compared by rtfbout to GT*046*j or yellow* toll* weak and bins when processed as a pulp and ooapared in paper coating to GT-76-P. Obviously this product would bo of ns interest If bisulfite were available; however in the event thet bisul fite beoase unobtainable* the product might be developed into a satisfactory replacement for the current type of Pi&aent Green B
.The introduction of bisulfite to the alkaline nltroso-Bnaphthol solution eauatd the tinctorial properties to approach those of the orthodox type but at 78g of the normal amount there was a deficiency in intensity when dried end in strength whsn processed as pulp* At some future date it nay be deslreble to oontinue the study*
