Kehoe, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. . Dear Dr. Kehoe: Your manuscript. Part I, on tetraethyl lead has been read by a number of our editors. It is our opinion that the paper deals more vdth the public health hazard than -with the more limited field of industrial hygiene. However, if it is meant to apply only to the attendants at service stations, this criticism would not be valid. It is our opinion that the publication would more properly appear in a paper such as the American Journal of Public Health, or as a special bulletin, in which case a more detailed discussion of the labora tory procedure could be included with advantage. Although you refer to work completed previously, and say that the proeddures were practically the same, any variation from the methods previously used should be described. Some of the readers felt that a doubt was thrown upon the validity of the result or the method of determination of lead, since less lead was shown in the excretion after six months of exposure to ethyl gasoline than was shown previous to exposure, This was entirely possible, but probably needs some explanation. . As you are- aware, the manuscript as it now stands would' be prohibitively expensive to publish because of the tables. I am sure no journal, unless heavily subsidized, would accept the manuscript. If you consider them essential, I think the suggestion made above that you publish it as separate bulletins published by your own laboratory would be most satisfactory. If you want us to publish the paper, we request you consider the above suggestions, and we will get an estimate on the cost and let you know hov: much we should require you to pay. Also, we could not publish it before the July issue, unless you wish to pay the entire cost, as you did for some of your lead papers. In that case, it could go in the Harch issue. I am sorry for the delay in writing you about this paper, but the editors held it up over the holidays. Sincerelv vours. PD. hi
