In answer to your request for information on future allowable effluent levels of dioctylphthalate (DOP) I offer the following. R&D sampled and analyzed Aberdeen waste water earlier in the year and found less than 1 ppm (mg/1) di-2-ethylhexylphthalate. Full results of their analysis are attached.
Earlier in the year, EPA published water quality criteria for each of the sixty-five categories of priority pollutants of which di-2-ethylhexy1phthalate is one. This criteria could be the basis for 1984 regulations. The recommended water quality criteria for di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate is 10 mg/1 which means that based on one sample you appear to be alright. One other sample should have been taken by RSD recently and more may be taken in the future.
Although this all sounds good, I don11 have a warm feeling about 1984 requirements. Industry ought to have more definitive guidance from EPA during 1980. In the meantime, I encourage you to do analytical work that will characterize levels of all chemicals detectable in waste water. Proposed Federal Regulations are saying that if we propose to discharge a chemical, we must list it in our permit application. Sounds tough, doesn't it?
Give me a call if you'd like to discuss further.
