On October 17, 2002, Stephen Johnson, Susan Hazen, and Charles Auer ofthe EPA Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances met with Richard Angiullo, Richard Holt, Robert Rickard, David Rurak, and Stephen KorzenowskiofDuPont to discuss perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and ammonium perfluorooctanoate (APFO).
EPA opened the discussion by providing an overviewofits understandingofthe current situation regarding hazards and exposure issues.
The DuPont representatives described their experience over the years in using APFO in their fluoropolymer operations, their product stewardship efforts, and their efforts working with the Fluoropolymer Manufacturers Group (FMG) and the Telomer Rescarch Program group (TRP) to develop needed hazard and exposure information. DuPont indicated that for many years most of their focus had been on occupational areas, but that this had changed when the issucs. with PFOS were recognized. DuPont indicated that within the next 6 months they hoped through their efforts and thoseof the FMG and TRP to be in a position to quantitatively assess PFOA exposure from its use as a surfactant in the manufacture of fluoropolymer products and from the breakdown of fluorinated telomers. They also reported that additional work was being done to understand the pharmacokinetics of PFOA and how this might relat to interpretation of PFOA measurements in blood. They committed to sharing this additional information with EPA.
EPA indicated its interest in receiving the additional information and asked that the industry provide it in a timely manner, recognizing that the best exchanges occurred when EPA received the information in advance such that it could be reviewed prior to the discussion.
