It has cone to my attention that the dust collection system in the Marinite room may need some improvement. A request was submitted by R I) Kielmyer to upgrade this system. 1 now have information on pre-engineered systems capable of handling asbestos dust. BILES During Mr. Biles employment in the Potlining Department, (1956 Sept. - 1958 Jan.), part of the insulation materials used to line smelting pots was a block material, generically referred to as Hi Temp, which haci several trade names including J M 2000, J M Super 2000, J M Super X and perhaps others. Prior to 1974 Hi Temp insulating blocks contained asbestos. However, exposures to asbestos fibers would have been minimal because blocks were ordered in appropriate sizes and, therefore, only a few needed to be cut, drilled or simply broken and no machining, sanding or other operations were required that generated airborn fibers. With the information available at that time and the low exposures observed, we did not believe sampling data nor respiratory protection was required. GRAEVELL: During Mr. Graevell's employment in the Potlining Department, approxi mately 18 months during 1960 - 1961, part of the insulation materials used to line smelting pots was a block material, generically referred to as Hi Temp, which had several trade names including J M 2000, J M Super 2000, J M Super X and perhaps others.
