Stephens Anniston Plant TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT S u mmary APRIL 1971 Specialty Products Test results show that Aroclor from Cumene injection Biphenyl produced in the Polyphenyl Pilot Unit is essentially equivalent in quality to lab synthesized Aroclor 1242 produced from acetone promoted Biphenyl. The Polyphenyl Tubular Unit Cumene Injection Project package was transmitted to Maintenance 12 April 1971. Materials and equipment are on order and will be installed in May '71. The Tentative Process Amendment was issued for approval. South Second St. AFE 3718 to remelt and distill Santowax C stored in the pond was revised to $20M expense - zero capital and received verbal approval. The installation will be completed 3 May '71. A progress report (No. 2 - 009-1104 April 27, 1971) was issued outlining the steps needed to produce low color A-5460. Revised design and costs should be coupleted in June '71. P. 0. DeGarmo Verbal approval was received to order major equipment on Project 3776, Standby Propane Fuel System. All major equip ment items are on order with the exception of the air compressor. Smull Texas City i Both the Santowax gear meter and the total hydrogen meter for HB-40 were removed from service because of malfunctions. Failure was traced to a ruptured diaphragm in the hydrogen meter due to "surging"; an orifice and a surge tank will be installed to correct the problem. Failure of the Santowax meter was due to scoring of the gear shafts by Raney nickel catalyst which was inadvertently blown back down the line. Both meters have been returned to vendors for repair and re calibration. The North Plant group (H. E. Voss) assumed responsibility for manufacturing representation on the Santowax still expansion, CEA 2472. Studies on PCB removal by the addition of a powdered adsorbent followed by flocculation-clarification removal of solids are continuing. A revised work plan covering powdered carbon addition will be issued by 5- 10-71. bl Division Work was initiated on a scope and estimate for recycle of still residue to improve Parathion yield and residue handling. PR&D studies on the recycle of filtered organic residue from 96% chlorinated Ethyl Intermediate into the next thio acid charge were initiated on 4-21-71. This work will complement studies completed earlier on Methyl Intermediate. Maintenance began installation on the experimental cone tank project to improve Parathion recovery. Samples of Muriatic Acid from the chlorinator drowning jets (during Ethyl run) were sent to Ag Research for analysis of impurities. Clean-up of the HC1 to produce saleable Muriatic Acid will be investigated when impurities are known. New chlorine control valves have been installed as part of Project 3713> Optimize Chlorine Input to the Niran Chlorinators. Controller settings necessary to optimize feed rates will be made by 5-7-71. Quality Control The plant quality score was 83.4, down 6.1 from March, with a YTD score of 88.7. Pollution Control April Aroclor losses were the lowest recorded since the Aroclor clean-up program began. The average daily loss was 0.65 #/day.
