Sanders, Jr. Si ii .(e.t r Asbestos - Central Shops Address BRT Date Jan. 23, 1980 As a follow-up to the asbestos survey conducted in the Houston Central Shops building in September of 1978, I con ducted personnel monitoring in this area on December 6, 1979. Four breathing-zone samples were collected and analyzed by the conventional methods. The two samples collected to re present exposure of two inside machinists both showed air borne concentrations of 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter of air. The samples that were representative of the exposure of a welder and a metal worker could not be analyzed due to excessive filter loading by another material (probably iron oxide based on its appearance). The current OSIIA standard is 2 fibers (longer than 5 microns) per cc of air. The standard also requires monitorinq at intervals no greater than 6 months in areas that may rea sonably be foreseen to exceed the limits of this standard. Based on the concentrations observed in this and the previous survey, we will plan to conduct personnel monitor inq at least annually until the disposition of the material is decided and effected.
