Typical commercial penta contains about 200 and 1000 ppm hepta- and octachlorodlbexucodioxins, respectively. No conclusions can be made regarding the higher than normal values found. Sample preparation envolved exposure to a mildly basic solution (aqueous borax). Some dioxins may have been generated through cydization of hepta and OCDD precursors.
A second series of vood boring samples from Eoppers is currently being analyzed by Applied Science of G.O.
I. BIOASSAY - CEF & EEC DATA SUMMARY___________
During the period 1972 through 1975, Bio Test Laboratories, Inc. of North brook, 111, carried out "chick edema factor" (CEF) studies on a number of Penta and other related samples for Monsanto, A detailed description of the method of testing is found In each of their reports accompanying the results for each sample tested. These reports are on file at Monsanto Dept, of Medicine & Environmental Health at G.O. One report (BTL-74-28) Is found in Appendix E-4.
The scope of this test however, envolves the introduction of varying amounts of the test sample Into the diets of groups of chicks. After a 21 day per iod, the chicks are sacrificed and the amount of perldardlal fluid in each Is quantitated. Other toxic effects are also noted. The following table (No. 7) summerires all of our tests to date. Rabbit ear chloracne tests car ried out by Carnegie Mellon University are Included In the table.
The limited "accurate" dioxin analyses show only ambiguous relation to CEF or REC data. Most Importantly however, the dioxin levels are not great enough to account.for the magnitude CEF responses. BTL Tests 74-108 & 74109 Indicate levels of^ 0 . 5 ppm TCDD or somewhere between 30 and 170 ppm hexa CDD are needed to give a positive response at a 1500 ppm penta dietary level.
CEF on distilled Penta (BTL-72-48) was also run at 5,000 ppm dietary level. All the chicks in the test group died short of the 21 day test period. This group shoved no CEF activity however, meaning the CEF response seen in tech nical samples cannot be due to Pentachlorophenol Itself.
In addition to the distilled samples (72-48, 73-28E, and 73-28F), some tech nical grade samples gave negative or only slight CEF response at the highest test level (1500 ppm).
